Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Crisis Services or designee, the Crisis Intervention Specialist (CIS) is a member of the IDD Crisis Team and the Southern Hub Crisis Team, providing integrated crisis services in-person and via televideo in Guadalupe, Caldwell, & Gonzales Counties. This new position is an Essential position on an integrated team, and as such is dually supervised by the Director of Crisis Services.

The MCOT CIS meets the person in crisis where they are- homes, schools, emergency rooms, and BTCS clinics to provide crisis intervention, screening, referral, relapse prevention and follow-up services. Follow-up services may include CIS services, case management, individual and group skills training, Person-Centered Recovery Planning, supported housing/employment, discharge planning and linkage to ongoing services.

This position collaboratively partners with law enforcement, the medical community/emergency room staff, schools, families, Medicaid providers and social service agencies to assist persons in crisis. The MCOT CIS possesses strong knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, and practices of working with individuals experiencing a mental health, substance use, and an intellectual or developmental disability related crisis, and must have the ability to communicate effectively with persons and families from diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. The MCOT CIS must have skills and experience using integrated computer database programs to access files and document services, as well as the ability to organize and prioritize work assignments. This position requires a flexible work schedule and the ability to work independently, yet collaboratively.

The clinician provides information to individuals with IDD, their families/caregivers and providers about available IDD programs and services and assists with linkage to outpatient services. Ongoing case management services, including direct behavior supports and parent training where appropriate, will be provided to a caseload of individuals with diagnoses of IDD/Autism who are experiencing crisis symptoms. There is daily opportunity to collaborate with interdisciplinary team members within internal BTCS programs and external providers to identify and support individuals with IDD who are at risk of, or experiencing crisis.

For individuals referred to crisis facilities, such as Diversion Center, Crisis Respite Unit, and Residential Withdrawal Management, the CIS develops a crisis respite service plan describing the needed therapeutic support, and works with the service coordinator and the service planning team to ensure that on-going crisis follow-up and monitoring address identified concerns and issues.

The CIS will be expected to be on-call on a rotating basis with other Crisis Intervention Specialists, who will be available for collaboration with MCOT after-hours and on holidays to provide support to assure they are able to provide effective, informed services for members of the population.

Salary: $24.23 – $36.48/hr

Applicable Differentials:

2 years previous crisis experience: $2.00/hour
4 years previous crisis experience: $1.50/hour

2 years previous experience with a community center: $1.00/hour

4 years previous experience with a community center: $1.00
Tenure with BTCS: Up to $4.00/hour
Advanced Licensure: $1.00/hour
Bilingual: $.75/hour
Master’s Degree in Human Services: $1.00/hour

Credentials
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a human services field or equivalent credit hours*; The staff member has at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum number of hours that is equivalent to a major in psychology, social work, medicine, nursing, rehabilitation, counseling, sociology, human growth and development, physician assistant, gerontology, special education, educational psychology, early childhood education, or early childhood intervention.
One year of experience working directly with persons with an intellectual disability or related conditions
Must have a valid Texas Driver's License and maintain approved driver’s status throughout employment..
  • If degree is not in a human services field, a minimum of 24 college credits in a human services field are required.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree; pursuing clinical licensure in counseling, social work or a related field.
    Bilingual in ASL or Spanish preferred; experience in providing concurrent documentation preferred.
    Licensure as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
