MATHEMATICS AT CASTILLEJA
Our curriculum is designed to support students in improving their computational skills, extending their conceptual understanding, and enhancing their problem-strategizing abilities. In class, students engage in individual and collaborative problem-solving as they solidify and extend core mathematics skills, explore underlying principles, and discover connections among topics. We encourage our students to discuss, explore, and compare alternative approaches to solving a problem, to promote critical thinking, and to leverage the wide variety of student strengths in the class.
50% of the Mathematics Support Teacher position involves supporting students for approximately 16 hours/week during the school day and running an after-school tutorial 3 times a week. Both will involve working with individual students and small groups to provide foundational support and targeted practice. This Support Teacher will be responsive to students’ needs and will support students as they develop mathematical understanding, engage in problem-solving and mathematical reasoning, and form a positive math identity with a greater sense of agency. The remaining 25% will be Math Department support to help the Department Lead with logistics of placement exams for incoming students, as well as the Geometry Honors Exemption Exam. Logistics include sending out emails, proctoring exams, tracking data, and meeting with students as part of the registration process for the Geometry Exemption Exam. This person will work closely with the Math Department Lead and report to the Upper School Head.
