Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Operations Engineering Manager works in collaboration with think[box] leadership to design, implement, and manage operational logistics and custom IT solutions. Provide systems architecture and design expertise necessary for operational excellence in the prototyping, fabrication, research support, outreach, and entrepreneurial resources of this world-class innovation center and core facility. Apply advanced knowledge of expert systems and web technologies to automate key functions, increase staff efficiency, and empower think[box] staff and faculty to focus on core priorities. Design, develop, test and administer a wide array of essential operational needs including; collection and analysis of user data, data mining to provide visual display of key performance indicators (KPIs), think[box] website, digital signage, office and conference room reservation systems, online surveys and forms, access control plans, and facility management. Act as the primary liaison between think[box] and Case Western Reserve University [U]Tech personnel and facilities staff. Working with a high degree of independence and minimum supervision, act as the key decision maker for all information technology and facilities operations throughout think[box].

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Operations Engineering: Design, develop, implement, document, maintain, and provide training for highly customized hardware, software, and information systems critical to operational excellence at think[box]. Benchmark and evaluate solutions against best practices when available and generate robust solutions when precedent is unavailable. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define design specifications for new IT-based systems. Design, develop, test and administer a suite of data collection and analysis software systems to provide visual displays and presentations of key performance indicators (KPIs) for internal and external stakeholders. Maintain the think[box] website, digital signage, office and conference room reservation systems, and online surveys and forms. Present novel IT solutions to peer institutions at conferences to promote Case Western Reserve University's position of leadership in innovation and entrepreneurial activities on an international stage. (40%)
  2. Technology Management: Act as the primary liaison to [U]tech for the purchase, implementation, and administration of university hardware and software systems. Identify, analyze, and solve IT issues at think[box] and on the web in conjunction with [U]tech. Advise think[box] leadership on IT infrastructure equipment selection, installation, and education as well as other programmatic activities. (25%)
  3. Facilities Administration: Administer to a broad variety of think[box] operations including access management, facility upgrades, and the think[box] user experience. Work with the Veale Athletic Center to coordinate access and movement between the two facilities. Work with Access Services to manage access to think[box] for faculty, staff, students, program participants, internal or external partners. Manage external services such as custodial and security. (20%)
  4. Technical Support and Mentorship: Provide IT technical support and mentorship to think[box] users (includes; students, researchers, faculty, staff, and entrepreneurs) through one-on-one meetings and think[box] programs. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)

CONTACTS

Department: Continuous contact with full-time think[box] professional staff and student technicians to produce, establish, and facilitate think[box] operations.

University: Regular contact with a wide variety of university departments, offices, and programs. Frequent contact with Utech, Development, Admissions, Security, and Building Services to facilitate think[box] operations.

External: Regular ongoing contact with a variety of hardware and software service providers to design, implement, evaluate, and update organizational systems.

Students: Regular contact with students to provide technical mentorship and programming.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Recruit, train, and manage a team of undergraduate and/or graduate student workers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 4 to 6 years of information technology experience in an industrial, educational, or other non-profit setting with a proven record of project management, systems design, user experience, active documentation, and software development. A collaborative approach to problem solving is essential.

Education: Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline, preferably Computer Science or Computer Engineering.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The employee's duties will demand working with various software applications, manual and computer-controlled machines, equipment, and processes. None of the processes will present any toxic hazards. Travel and flexible hours will be required.
