Job Summary

The Nurse Paralegal will organize and review medical records, prepare medical summaries, conduct background and medical literature research, prepare and respond to discovery, deal with clients, identify and correspond with expert witnesses, interview witnesses, prepare pleadings and letters, and otherwise assist attorneys and staff with cases of alleged medical negligence, personal injury or other litigation.

Responsibilities

• CASE/FILE MANAGEMENT – Open new files in legal file management software system (Worldox) and gather and input related intake information and relevant documents, including patient medical records and litigation materials. Verify insurance coverage and maintain communication with applicable carriers. Work with client representatives, expert witnesses and others to investigate and develop defense strategies. Gather information responsive to discovery requests. Work with in-house attorneys and outside attorneys to efficiently and effectively manage cases and meet all deadlines. • MEDICAL CHRONOLOGIES - Review and analyze relevant medical and billing records and prepare an accurate, appropriately focused, indexed medical chronologies to assist attorneys. • MEDICAL NOTEBOOKS - Organize, index and tab relevant medical records to provide to experts and outside counsel and assist attorneys in meetings with experts, witnesses, and treating providers. • MEDICAL LITERATURE RESEARCH - Conduct medical literature research to identify, locate and obtain articles pertinent to the case, or which may have been cited by an expert. • MEDICAL FACT ANALYSIS – Fully investigate each case. Prepare detailed explanation of medical facts as identified from patient records and by expert reports, witness statements, and depositions. • EXPERT IDENTIFICATION & RECRUITMENT - Assist attorneys in identifying specialties needed, identifying and contacting qualified candidates for expert support, preparing expert review packages, and following up with case reviews. • SCHEDULING – Assist attorneys in scheduling court appearances, mediations and meetings with witnesses, outside counsel, experts and others. • EXPERT MEETING ASSISTANCE - Assist attorneys as requested in meetings with medical experts. • CLIENT INTERACTION – Maintain regular communication with clients. Coordinate and collaborate, as appropriate, with client departments and staff, including safety, risk management, patient accounts and financial services. • DRAFTING – Prepare correspondence and documents, including pleadings, discovery requests, responses to discovery requests, settlement documents. • MMSEA REPORTS – Assisting attorneys in compiling information, preparing and filing required reports of the details of settlements, judgments, awards or other payments to Medicare recipients.

• Associate's Degree
• Bachelor's Degree
• Formalized Training (Required) Substitution: May substitute LPN with considerable clinical and legal experience for RN
