Burns & McDonnell's team in its Upper Midwest Region is looking for a Staff Environmental Engineer to both support and manage environmental investigation and remediation projects. The position offers the opportunity to take on project management responsibilities tackling the most challenging environmental issues of today leveraging cutting edge of technology applied in the remediation industry, including 3D visualization modeling, forensic studies and investigation, high resolution site characterization (HRSC), remediation systems engineering design, etc.

This position requires experience managing environmental site assessment and remediation projects including installation and sampling of monitoring wells, remedial investigation, feasibility studies, remedial action plan and design, installing remediation systems, managing subcontractors, report and permit preparation, and other activities, as required. Experience with emerging contaminants of concern including PFAS and experience investigating coal combustion residuals (CCR) is strongly preferred.

The Staff Environmental Engineer will be part of an experienced team working on a variety of site investigation and remediation projects for a wide range of clients and will generally perform the following duties:
  • Prepare environmental investigation work plans, reports, feasibility studies, etc.
  • Perform safety, project and task management duties on environmental projects.
  • Subcontractor solicitation and contracting, scheduling, and management of field activities involving staff and subcontractors.
  • Execute and guide environmental site assessments, including subsurface soil and groundwater sampling, air and vapor monitoring, monitoring well installation, soils logging, etc.
  • Assist in remediation system design and operation, including in-situ remedies, cover systems, recovery and treatment, etc.
  • Work closely with project teams and field personnel to complete and review projects within scope, budget and schedule.
  • All other duties assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related engineering field from an accredited program.
  • Engineer In Training (EIT) certification is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience required (6 years strongly preferred) completing environmental investigations, remedial investigations and remedial actions, contracting, risk management.
  • Demonstrated aptitude performing environmental field activities including multi-media environmental monitoring and sampling of various media, waste characterization, etc.
  • Demonstrated aptitude analyzing, interpreting and summarizing data, preparing technical reports, etc.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training (and annual updates) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team framework.
  • Previous consulting experience is a plus.
  • Experience serving as an assistant project manager or task manager is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working on projects with emerging contaminants of concern including PFAS and PFOA is strongly preferred.
  • Experience investigating coal combustion residuals (CCR) at regulated facilities is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency navigating regulations and possessing a working knowledge of State and/or Federal regulations in the upper Midwest desired.
