$43,101 - $47,893 Annually (Depending on Education or Experience)

$19.39 - $21.54 Per Hour (Depending on Education or Experience)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under close supervision, provides the proper detention and care of persons lawfully incarcerated and maintains the safety, security, and welfare of inmates, staff, and the general public. Work involves performing duties of assigned post orders; and overseeing the activities of inmates, including those assigned to work release programs. Reports to the Sergeant as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs the daily care, feeding, and supervision of inmates. Supervises inmate activities, including recreation, visitation, religious services, mail distribution, trustee/work release program, etc.; serves meals; issues clothing and supplies; schedules medical appointments; distributes medications; transports inmates to court, appointments, etc.; collects, secures and/or deposits inmate monies and property.

Implements security and safety protocols to ensure the safety and welfare of inmates, staff, visitors and the general public.

Conducts hourly inspection rounds; conducts inmate searches and searches cells for weapons and contraband.

Observes inmates' behavior; settles disputes between inmates; responds to all situations which pose a threat to inmates, staff or the public.

Conducts head counts.

Performs inmate booking and release procedures, including photographing and fingerprinting inmates.

Receives and responds to inmates' and their families' requests, inquiries, and complaints.

Attends periodic workshops, seminars, etc. to keep abreast of laws, regulations and trends in detention management and law enforcement. Maintains required proficiency in the use of weapons.

Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly workplace and inmate facilities.

Receives and/or reviews inmate records, incident reports, photographs, court orders, medical requests, complaint forms, booking sheets, rap sheets, head counts, medication log, inmate rosters, shift briefing, policy and procedures, memos, misconduct reports, charging papers, etc.

Prepares and/or processes incident reports, medication forms, booking reports, inventory reports, suicide reports, escape reports, search reports, various logs, meal count, fingerprint cards, inmate rosters, shift briefing, court paperwork, misconduct reports, etc.

Refers to policy and procedure manuals, directives, log book, misconduct reports, inmate records, maintenance reports, S.C. Code of Laws, government regulations, directories, prescription drug manual, computer manual, etc.

Operates a vehicle and a variety of office equipment such as a computer, printer, copier, calculator, telephone, camera, etc. Operates/uses and maintains restraining devices, cap stun, security monitors, two-way radio, fingerprint kit, and other law enforcement / emergency equipment and supplies. Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.

Uses handcuffs, leg irons, restraint chair, emergency cell tool, various weapons, first aid/medical, cleaning, computer and clerical supplies. Uses computer software such as Flex, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Paint, etc.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor and other superior officers, Sheriff, co-workers, trainees, other County department managers and staff, law enforcement personnel, court personnel, inmates and their family members, attorneys, probation and parole agencies, medical personnel, clergy, law enforcement, and the general public.
