GENERAL

The Outdoor Science School Counselor is responsible to the Program Directors and works to instruct and lead participants in their activities while maintaining the safety of participants and the integrity of the program. Counselors should want to work with youth, appreciate the outdoors and follow the IROEC and BSA Mission.

The mission of the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is to serve all youth of Orange County by providing quality outdoor educational programs that instill in them an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach effective teamwork, instruct about the cultural history of Orange County, and provide access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Willing to work with all age groups; elementary, middle school, high school, and adult programming.

* Ability to positively maintain a focused learning environment in a variety of situations and settings.

* Exceptional attention to detail concerning participants' needs.

* Comfortable leading songs, skits, and large group games.

* Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of California natural and cultural histories. Uses teaching techniques to dynamically present the facts and underlying principles of these disciplines to students.

* Ensure that safety and protocol are followed in accordance with American Camp Association and the Boy Scouts of America.

* Works with supervisors to promote positive behavior.

* Assists in the inventory and maintenance of equipment.

* Works as part of a team with other IROEC staff members and uses interpersonal communication techniques to ensure the success of the program and positive work environment.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

* Must be able to fulfill the essential requirements of the Outdoor Science Camp Counselor position

* Must be at least 18 years old.

* Ability to work a varying work schedule including weekdays and weekends

* Ability to work independently

* Has or is willing to obtain certification in Red Cross (or another approved vendor) Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED within 30 days of employment

PREFERRED

* Four-year degree in a field relating to education OR equivalent relevant work experience

* Demonstrated experience working with children in an organized educational or recreational setting

* Bilingual

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Outdoor Science School Counselor position is at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center (IROEC). Working in a camp environment includes providing customer service, solving problems, and cooperation with others, regardless of your title. Working at the IROEC specifically requires a desire to develop and work with youth, which can occasionally lead to challenging interactions.
