Purpose

Bowman's East Coast Transportation group is committed to improving communities through multimodal transportation. We work with municipalities, transit agencies, institutions and other public and private sector clients to make it easier, safer and more efficient to walk, bike, take transit and use emerging mobility options. Our projects involve elements such as Complete Streets design, pedestrian and bicycle planning, Vision zero, transit service planning, Transportation Demand Management, parking studies, environmental sustainability, landscape architecture and community planning.

We are seeking a self-motivated, creative, communicative and passionate transportation planner to work on a variety of fast paced projects. You will work on teams of planners, engineers and landscape architects to develop transportation solutions that are both innovative and practical to enhance quality of life.

This position has the flexibility to be based in one of our New England region offices, including Boston, Taunton or Westfield, MA or Lincoln, RI.

Key Responsibilities

Do the Work

You will participate in all aspects of planning projects, including preparing maps and graphics for public and client meetings, data analysis, drafting formal reports and documents, performing field reviews and data collection, conducting research on trends and best practices, contributing to stakeholder and public engagement efforts, preparing proposals, developing solutions to complex problems, and presenting recommendations.

  • Research, analyze, compile and graphically display data for transportation problem solving and to aid in storytelling and presentation.
  • Draft written planning studies and reports for both Clients and public audiences.
  • Develop GIS-based maps for analytical and graphical purposes.
  • Prepare conceptual plans and visuals to illustrate proposed solutions.
  • Assist in preparing for and supporting public engagement programs, both in-person and virtual, including workshops, open house, virtual meetings/webinars, online surveys and ArcGIS Online applications.

Education, Work Experience, Licensure/Certifications, and Technical Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning or related field.
  • Master’s degree in City/Urban/Regional/Community Planning from an accredited college or university or an equivalent degree preferred.
  • Three or more (3 ) years of professional experience required, with transportation planning experience preferred. A master's degree may substitute for some professional experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), graphics programs including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign and mapping platforms including ESRI ArcPro/ArcGIS Online preferred.
  • Direct knowledge with community engagement preferred.
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling programs and additional graphic design applications a plus.
  • AICP a plus.
  • Valid state driver's license and ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle check or reliable form of transportation to/from the office and/or project site strongly preferred.

Leadership and Direction

  • Receive general instruction on key objectives to execute project-based assignments. The transportation planner will have the ability to work independently with direction provided, as needed, based on complexity of assignments. Work is completed using industry standard planning techniques and principles and is reviewed by more senior staff to ensure application of sound professional judgement. The transportation planner will review work produced by junior staff for quality assurance.
  • Provide mentorship through counsel, guidance, and knowledge to junior staff.

At the Operational and Company Level

  • Assist with the marketing of the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.
  • Work closely with more senior staff members to learn about and assist with transportation planning and engineering work and proposal preparation.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines and internal services/groups/offices (i.e., traffic, signals, ITS bridge, survey, etc.) as necessary.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Primarily indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Mobility around an office environment.
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Occasional outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
