Job Description

Responsible for managing golf operations at Oak Hollow or Blair Park Golf Course. Engaged in general operation of the golf course, driving range, and pro shop.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Golf Administrator. Supervision is exercised over other Golf Professionals and/or Assistant Golf Professionals.
Work schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Additional income opportunities exist through private lessons.

Essential Tasks

  • Provides excellent customer service to guests, takes reservations in person and by telephone, collects fees and keeps accurate records of the money and attendance primarily through a point-of-sale computer program.
  • Supervises control of all funds collected at the golf course and does supervisory work necessary in collecting, accounting, recording, and reporting these funds.
  • Develops and manages a program consisting of tournaments, group outings, and leagues that provide opportunities for all customer segments.
  • Manages retail merchandise operations with direction from the Golf Administrator.
  • Works with the Golf Administrator to oversee pro shop budget and authorize purchases of golf shop materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Hires, trains, and coaches full-time and part-time employees.
  • Works closely with Golf Course Superintendent, who oversees golf course maintenance and upkeep of areas outside of the clubhouse facilities.
  • Coordinates with Grillroom Supervisor to ensure food and beverage needs are met for tournaments and group outings.
  • Assists with golf marketing in conjunction with department and City marketing staff.
  • Assists with the operation of a comprehensive volunteer guest assistant, starter, and ranger program.
  • Oversees golf instruction, clinics, golf schools, and player development for all customer segments.
  • Manages golf cart fleet while ensuring proper maintenance and recordkeeping through following factory recommendations and consulting service advisor.
  • Works with the Golf Administrator to establish and enforce golf course rules and regulations.
  • Serves as a liaison with City officials, golfers, civic and social groups, and clubs on golf course matters.
  • Enforces all City and departmental policies and safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City safety standards and policies.
  • Completes other work as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Education
    • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university.
  • Supervision
    • Minimum 3 years of experience in golf course operation, serving in a supervisory role.
    • Ability to plan and supervise the work of technical, clerical and other personnel.
  • Certification
    • Must have a valid Class A Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) card.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and policies used in golf course operations.
  • Some knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of golf courses.
  • Ability to prepare, maintain and monitor detailed technical and financial records and to supervise shop operations and to account for revenues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License

    Physical Requirements
    Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are necessary to converse with other employees and supervisor working together to accomplish task.
    Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
    • Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see the patrons across an open space and give instructions to them regarding the program activity. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected.
    • Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see program materials, telephone, merchandise, documents and other paperwork near at hand. Both eyes 20/22 corrected.
    • Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time. Depth perception - 4
    • Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span to cover surrounding area to observe patrons who are in the area while attending to the activity at hand.
    • Accommodation -Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check entire work area. Must be able to adjust the lens of eye to glance quickly at equipment or people who are located at varying distances.
    Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
    • Light to Medium Work
      • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or
      • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and
      • A negligible amount of force constantly to handle or move materials related to the position.
      • Physical demands usually require walking, standing, running, stooping, bending, stretching, reaching, lifting; however, worker does sit at times. There is significant use of arms, hands, feet and legs.

    • Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s).

    • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor or members of the public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner; to understand and communicate with individuals of varying ages. Good judgement is important because the individual will interact directly with the public on a constant basis and may be working in the absence of a supervisor.
    Mathematics Ability
    • Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to use arithmetic to add and figure number of program participants and attendants, collect fees, make change and make reports.
    Language Ability
    • The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.
    Environmental Conditions
    Physical Surroundings
    • The Head Golf Professional is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Combining the type of work performed with the various weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in a hot or cold environment.
    Hazards
    • The Head Golf Professional will be exposed to chemicals and fertilizers associated with grounds work, trash garbage, paint, paint thinner, and cleaning products. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

    • Items which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work: Golf carts, point of sale computer programs, receipt books, pro shop and club house merchandise, golf clubs and tees, calculator, stapler, telephone, telephone directory, note pads, pens, pencils, Personnel Resolution, calendar, budget, records, schedules, various forms and reports and other work aids related to the job.
