The Team
The Machine Shop Team is a highly skilled group of machinists and fabricators that bring our company's designs to life. The team is responsible for taking raw materials to finished form, while observing dimensional requirements and schedule constraints. The goal is always to produce finished parts that are of higher quality, lower cost, and to make them faster than any other shop!
The Opportunity
As a Machine Shop Intern , you are invaluable in many areas of the shop - Performing finishing operations, installing threaded inserts, loading/unloading CNC machines, and assisting machinists with their tasks. You will also be exposed to Quality Control and may assist in performing inspections or working with metrology instruments. You are comfortable and responsible while working with or in the close vicinity of machines that can cut metal, such as mills, lathes, saws, grinders, and drill presses and more. Furthermore, you will assist our Maintenance team by helping to clean, fix, and perform preventative maintenance on our many tools. You are a good communicator and conduct yourself with a safety-first attitude. Your priority, along with the rest of the shop team, is to produce finished parts faster, cheaper, and at higher quality than our vendors. This intern role will report directly to the Development Shop Manager.
How You'll Fulfill Your Mission
    • Support the operation of CNC lathes and mills by loading raw materials or performing other tasks under the supervision of a programmer or other machinist. Other contributions include material preparation (saw, deburr, wipe clean) or machine maintenance required to keep the machine running.
    • Operate manual metal-cutting machinery such as manual mills/lathes, drill presses, and saws in order to assist the shop in making or reworking parts. Job complexity may require prior experience, but some training can be provided on a job-by-job basis
    • Maintain machine shop tools and machines by assisting our Maintenance Team.
    • Clean the shop areas including workbenches, floors, and machines to help maintain a bright well-presenting shop
    • Inspect finished parts using a variety of handheld inspection tools including calipers, micrometers, and hard gauges. You may also employ a surface plate and height gauge and profilometer during part inspections.
    • Inspect finished parts under the direction of Quality Control staff, or assist the QC Lab in a variety of small projects.
    • Assist with special request projects such as shop improvement initiatives, general material handling, or digital record keeping and inventory.

    • You have used basic hand tools (hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc) and power tools (cordless drills, etc)
    • You have a basic understanding of how to read part drawings or blueprints in order to determine dimensions and tolerances
    • You can lift 40 lbs, push heavy carts or crates, and can stretch, reach, kneel, or crawl as may be required by certain tasks
    • You can dispose of waste or scrap material according to company processes
    • You maintain a clean work area and have a mind for organization
    • You feel comfortable using computers and can use Microsoft Excel and email.
    • You aren't afraid to get your hands dirty or wet in the course of making parts or performing regular machine preventative maintenance
    • You can calculate feeds and speeds and can solve geometry problems
    • You can lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in preparation for machining
    • You understand the differences between different types of materials, their grades, and their relative machinability, and can identify them quickly
    • You are proficient with fundamental measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, hard gauges, and height gauges
    • You aren't afraid to admit fault and don't hesitate to ask questions when in doubt
Desired Multipliers
    • You have taken machining classes or have worked in a shop before
    • You a skilled with inspection tools such as calipers, height gauges, micrometers, or gauges.
    • CAD or CAM experience on any platform
    • Understanding of GD&T
    • Experience in fabrication, including welding, sheet metal, waterjet, assembly, or finish work
    • Trained in an engineering, quality, or design discipline
$25 - $28 an hour
