Position Summary:
Have you dreamt about being on a team who spends their days rescuing sick, injured and abused animals? The Arizona Humane Society's Emergency Animal Medical Technicians (EAMTs) and Animal Cruelty Investigators do just that! We run ambulance calls for sick and injured stray pets, complete complex rescues for animals stuck in life threatening situations, support our local police departments in the investigation of animal crimes, and provide disaster support all over the state!
Day in the Life:
  • Respond to emergency calls to pick up and transport sick and injured stray animals.
  • Perform physical exams, triage, and stabilization of animals.
  • Safely perform complex rescues of animals stuck in life threatening situations such as in attics, walls, engines, drains, canals, and trees.
  • Evaluate the behavior of animals on scene. Handle all animals with compassion, use restraint as needed for safety, with an emphasis on soft handling techniques whenever possible.
  • Complete extensive documentation of case history, behavior observations and medical assessments in shelter software.
  • Respond to, investigate and follow up on animal cruelty complaints. Collect evidence, take photographs and video, scan in relevant records, and provide thorough documentation in shelter software.
  • Prepare formal reports for police departments and prosecutors.
  • Testify in court for civil seizure and criminal proceedings.
  • Maintain clean and well stock company vehicles.
  • Represent the mission and vision of AHS with the public, donors, volunteers, and media personnel at the shelter and events as required.
  • Train new Field staff on proper procedures and company guidelines.
  • Complete investigator training as required, including continuing education and certifications.
  • Cross train in Field Dispatch, assist the dispatch team as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education / Certifications / Licenses:
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Successful completion of an EAMT assessment with a passing score of 75% or greater within six months of start date.
  • Successful completion of the Physical Assessment test will be required annually to maintain employment.
  • Valid driver's license.
Experience:
  • Experience as Humane Officer, Animal Control Officer, Police Officer, or Military Police preferred.
  • Shelter experience preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of Arizona Revised Statute Title 13, and animal-related portions of Titles 3 and 11.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
Language - Able to speak, read, write and understand English. Spanish language skills helpful.
Mathematical - Basic
Technical - Proficiency with or able to learn/use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment) and able to learn other software programs as necessary.
Other:
Regular attendance, punctuality and access to reliable transportation are required. Must be a highly organized individual and possess good public relations and customer service skills.
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. He/she will occasionally work at heights and be expected to do some climbing. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds to a height of four feet. There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Typical work environment will be out of the office, driving a truck in a safe manner, working in the field in typical Arizona weather conditions.
