WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Scenic Charge Artist collaborates with the Technical Direction team and Set Designer to determine the paint process for each production to achieve the finished look of the scenic design.

MINIMUM/CORE REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3-5 years experience in theatrical painting.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of scenic painting techniques.
  • Ability to draw, plaster/texture, paint, and sculpt using scenic art techniques and methods such as faux painting, distressing, aging, etc. Ability to use HVLP, airless, airbrush, and Hudson sprayers. Excellent color matching skills. Ability to execute paint treatments within a schedule.
  • Ability to adapt to frequently changing circumstances, work collaboratively with other employees and guest artists, and maintain a positive attitude in challenging situations.
  • Ability to interpret design drawings/elevations and translate design concepts into practical applications.

KEY FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Prepare samples for approval of the set designer based on information provided (renderings and elevations) to ensure the elements for each production will be finished to desired effect of the design team and director of the production.
  • Work with Technical Direction and Properties team to create a paint schedule that meets the overall needs of each production.
  • Communicate additional staffing and material needs to Technical Direction team.
  • Paint and supervise all aspects of paint process through finish and assume responsibility for work done within time and budget limitations.
  • Responsible for leading staff and over hire scenic artists.
  • Responsible for maintenance and inventory of all paint equipment and supplies.
  • Create touch up kits for Production Carpenter to maintain the finish of each show throughout the run.
  • May be required to work late nights and holidays depending on show needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to climb and work from lifts/ladders with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Capable of wearing a respirator.
