Job Description
Formulation Specialist Manager - Kennesaw, GA
Formulation Specialist Manager is responsible for leading the development of new formulations as well as modifying existing products to meet customer needs and/or improve manufacturing efficiencies. Formulation Specialist Manager must be capable of daily task orchestration and leadership of working site-specific product development group team members. Further, the Formulation Specialist Manager must be competent of working processes and management of data/information/technical expertise to cross-departmental team members and external contacts to carry out typical Product Development functionality within the business. An essential element of this position requires the Formulation Specialist Manager to have the ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and problem-solve manufacturing process issues related to product formulation through an understanding of mechanical systems and ingredient properties. Must have experience with operating dietary supplement equipment, ingredient knowledge to develop R&D and scale up batches for identifying potential manufacturing difficulties.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Formulates dietary supplements which can include enzymes, probiotics, vitamins, minerals, and/or botanical ingredients.
  • Prepares product rationales and provides other technical product support utilizing company information files and individual research.
  • Develops formulations and quotations in a variety of delivery forms based upon customer and/or Deerland requirements.
  • Manages departmental KPI tracking and reporting to upper management.
  • Answers technical questions related to raw materials and product formulations.
  • Assists other company personnel with the acquisition, maintenance, and utilization of information for current and potential raw materials.
  • Participates in the research and development of new blends, processes and/or finished products.
  • Ensures that new products are balanced to meet both customer defined needs and Deerland production capabilities.
  • Liaison with other departments including Quality Assurance, Technical, Sales and Marketing to communicate technical information regarding formulations and/or raw materials.
  • Collaborates with Sales, Marketing, and other technical staff in the development of innovative products.
  • Supports product development efforts through scientific, medical, and biochemical literature research Participates in the development of specifications for raw materials and finished products in cooperation with Technical Services, Quality Assurance and Manufacturing staff.
  • Maintains information in a variety of databases including, but not limited to those containing information relations to formulation and raw materials.
  • Travel as required to help facilitate any of the above topics.
  • Write and imitate stability protocols as negotiated with customer/Sales, and coordinate with various groups as required for protocol completion.
  • Compliance with all safety procedures and SOP's related to each job task
  • Overall improvement of Product Development and new product set up processes
  • Develop and delivery of customer-friendly support material to enhance and validate formulation choices/design.
Education
  • Minimum - Bachelors degree or higher; preferred in technical, nutritional, pharmaceutical, product management or equivalent.
  • Preferred - Masters degree
Experience
  • Minimum - 3-5 years' experience in supplement, pharmaceutical, food science, or other product development focused field.
  • Preferred - 5-10 years' experience in supplement, pharmaceutical, food science, or other product development focused field with specialization in dietary/nutritional products. Minimum 1 years' experience in leadership/team management capacity.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific/technical journals, professional journals, marketing reports, and government regulations.
  • Superior multi-tasking, and time management skills
  • High level written and verbal communication capabilities
  • Ability to author technical reports, business correspondence, and procedural documents.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of interpersonal situations, solve practical problems and deal with variable business situations.
  • Strong leadership and inter-/intra-departmental communication skills
  • Very strong computer skills, including all Microsoft Office programs (spreadsheet management, presentations, document and form/template development, etc.), data tracking / manipulation / presentation, Salesforce (CRM systems), back-end ERP system familiarity
