Job Description:

Job Title: Youth Academy Special Education Teacher

Department: Student Services

Supervisor: Director of Student Services

Lane Placement: Certified Salary Scheduled

Schedule: 186 days/8 hours a day

FLSA Classification: Non - Exempt

JOB DESCRIPTION Canyons School District supports a continuum of services for sixth through twelfth grade students who have been involved with safe schools incidents. One of the placement options is in a special program known as Youth Academy that provides opportunities for students to continue their education while offering significant behavioral supports. Because some of these students need special education services, the teacher who holds this position will be responsible for working with the IEP team of the students sending school to provide services needed for students both at Youth Academy and those who are assigned to Home and Hospital because of safe schools incidents. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Design instruction for special education students in Youth Academy and at Home and Hospital

Attends IEP team meetings for students in Youth Academy and in Home and Hospital

Collects data to inform IEP teams as they set goals and update eligibility

Works in close collaboration with school-based IEP teams to ensure seamless delivery of services

Attends transition meetings as students move in and out of Youth Academy, Home and Hospital and traditional school settings

Support with transportation needs of students; ride bus if needed or transport students with district vans as needed

Communicates with families and serves as a resource for families who have questions about their student

Works with district-based special education staff and specialists to ensure that students receive appropriate services

Works with the District Case Management Team facilitator to provide data and information for reviews of students as they recommend next steps for students assigned to Youth Academy; gathers data on students enrolled in YA to determine if goals are met that are set by the District Case Management Team

Coordinates and participates in securing on-going resources for students

Actively participates in establishing, reinforcing and sustaining Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports (PBIS) as part of YAs behavioral management system

Accepts assignments for special projects as needed at both a school and district level

Ability to work with both middle school- and high school-aged students

Preferred Skills:

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Incumbent must be fingerprinted and clear a criminal backgrounds check

Must have current certification as a Licensed Special Educator

Administrative Licensure is preferred but not required

Must have minimum of three years prior experience working with at-risk students, families and/or community agencies

Prior experience working in public schools

Proficiency in Spanish would be ideal but not required

Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with school-based personnel and community partners

Ability to treat students, parents and staff with empathy and discretion

Demonstrated skill in facilitating meetings that are inclusive and solution-focused

Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written

Willingness to continually learn new information and develop new skills

Ability to take initiative, work efficiently and effectively with little oversight, and complete assignments

on-time

Ability to work collaboratively and individually on assigned tasks

Ability to keep sensitive information confidential

Proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, Power Point, Google Docs, etc.

Willingness to collaborate with and actively support other school, department and district initiatives

NOTE: The Administration reserves the right to require specific training for this position. However, depending upon the type and quality of prior work experience and availability of formal training programs, some exchanges can be made between training and experience.

Possesses the physical, mental, and emotional stability to work under stressful conditions, including but not limited to: deadlines, contract requirements, inspection requirements, interaction with critical personnel, interaction with parents and community members, and consistent changes in the educational profession

Requires the ability to lift a minimum of ten (10) pounds.
