American Public Media Group is Hiring a Fellow, Marketplace Podcasts Near Los Angeles, CA

Position Information :
  • Start Date: June 17, 2024 - June 6, 2025
  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA
  • Pay: $18/hour - $23/hour (salary will be based on individual's education and/or relevant experience)
Fellow, Marketplace Podcasts:
As the Marketplace Podcasts Fellow, you will have the opportunity to work with the award-winning teams behind Marketplace's portfolio of podcasts, from our daily news podcast, Make Me Smart, to our longform narrative shows like How We Survive and This Is Uncomfortable to our growing suite of shows that aim to make young people more financially literate including Million Bazillion and Financially Inclined. You will be supporting the production teams as they plan and produce the next seasons.
An exciting part of this fellowship is the opportunity to pitch a podcast project that can be completed during the fellowship that allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of our shop and proficiency with the work. Examples include - a cross over episode of This is Uncomfortable/How We Survive which is lead-produced by the fellow. We will also consider cross-department projects within the digital and on-demand space (such as a digital video series tied to a forthcoming season of How We Survive, a special newsletter takeover, etc.)
Key Learning Goals:
The goal of this fellowship is to provide immersive learning and real-world experience through impactful work. By the end of your fellowship, you will be able to:
  • Gain hands on experience working on editorial projects from conception to release and work closely with early/mid/late career journalists to learn best practices in doing so
  • Understand cross-platform collaborations and how modern journalism exists outside of a single medium to best reach our core and prospect audiences
Responsibilities:
In this fast-paced position, you will:
  • Assist the production team, including conducting research, interviewing, writing, prepping, producing interviews, recording, cutting tape
  • Ability to pitch ideas that fulfill the mission of Marketplace and the voice of the individual show they're presented to, that are able to be produced with existing resources
  • Become proficient in writing in the voice of the show in scripts, web copy, and podcast showpages
  • Be proficient in all aspects of production

Programming:
  • Participate in robust on-boarding experience
  • Professional development: on-the-job training, workforce readiness training, formal performance review feedback sessions, etc.
  • Participate in brown bag sessions to gain broader perspective of the organization
Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program OR have at least 2 years of relevant professional experience in journalism or communication
  • Some background/experience in a newsroom OR on a longform journalism podcast
  • Familiarity with audio editing (any platform)
  • Familiarity with journalism ethics
  • Should be familiar with podcasts and journalism podcasts (world of journalism)
  • General interest in news or other areas of our expertise: finance, financial literacy, climate change, economics, business, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Another applicable internship experience (in a public radio newsroom, on a daily news podcasts, etc.)
  • Experience working with hosts
