Colleague Experience Technology Services team is looking for an Engineering Director who will be responsible for owning and driving delivery for several colleague-facing business units. This director will have a specific focus on supporting the Corporate Affairs and Communications business unit as well as our corporate intranet (The Square) and enterprise Wellness and Benefits applications. This is a key opportunity for any individual who personifies servant leadership and mentoring to drive product engineering teams, cultivate continual improvement in processes service quality, improve the colleague experience, and plan strategically.

The Director and their team will provide in-depth expertise on how to configure and integrate a blend of internally developed and SaaS applications to create intuitive, end-to-end colleague experiences, enable efficient HR business processes, and to accelerate business strategy. Working in close partnership with Business, Product, Systems and Operations organizations, the Director is accountable for ensuring our products are on a continuous path of improvement and American Express is equipped to take full advantage of the current and upcoming technology trends and strategies.

Responsibilities

Software Development 

• Ensure their teams successfully develop, deploy, support, and monitor software across various environments.
• Able to work with complex senior stakeholders to drive business and technical outcomes
• Partner with and influence third-party software providers to create innovative, shared solutions to business problems.
• Provide DevOps and issue management support for portfolio applications.
• Enable seamless, coordinated testing and change management for portfolio applications
• Work effectively across the Technology organization to drive results from specialist, partner organizations (e.g. Information Security).
• Delivering software solutions that meet or exceed customer and partner expectations by developing and driving innovation and experimentation within Technology.
• Able to share technology domain expertise with architects and other specialists across multiple organizations.
• Ensure frictionless automated delivery from the teams.
• Empower teams to succeed at scale.

Leadership

• Promote, empower, and practice servant leadership.
• Cultivate an environment of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics.
• Recruit and cultivate top talent by driving technical and leadership development.
• Collaborate with a wide variety of partners across business and technology teams to motivate change required to execute product roadmaps.
• Coach, guide, and promote creation of high quality, clearly documented, and compliant work across engineering teams.
• Ensure alignment of strategy, architecture, tools/methods with software engineers and architects to execute product roadmaps.
• Ensures automated CI/CD pipeline and a production environment that scales to meet anticipated demand.
• Lead multiple agile software product development teams that realize the company’s technology vision and strategy in a scalable, iterative environment.
• Collaborates with peers and partners to drive software solutions that align to strategic roadmaps, prioritized initiatives and strategic technology directions, and contributes to engineering best practices across the company.

Qualifications

• 10 Years of total experience in technology leadership role.
• 6 years of experience leading software engineering teams.
• Experience in third-party management.
• Extensive hands-on experience building and being responsible for the development of complex, large scale enterprise applications and products that require a deep understanding of application logic and dependencies.
• Proven experience attracting, hiring, retaining and leading top engineering talent.
• Experience with Scrum, Kanban, or another Agile application development methodology.
• Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, computer science engineering, or related experience required, advanced degree preferred.
• Passion and commitment to creating exceptional colleague experiences.

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
