University Transit Service (UTS) at the University of Virginia's Department of Parking and Transportation is searching for reliable Part-Time Transit Bus Drivers. The Part-Time Transit Bus Driver works within the University Transit Service to provide transportation services to the University of Virginia Community. Duties include operation of a transit unit on a fixed route as well as transit operation in support of University-wide events. Work hours are no more than 28 hours per week. Anticipated position compensation: $19 per hour. This is a wage position that is not eligible for leave or other benefits and is limited to 1500 hours of work in a year. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Required Qualification: Valid Driver's License. Must possess a good driving record, that is, possess a zero or positive point balance on license. Must be able to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passengers and Air Brakes endorsements within the first 30-45 days of employment. Knowledge of highway regulations; effective verbal and listening communications skills; time and stress management skills; ability to read and write in the English language to record and maintain daily route records; ability to understand, follow, and execute verbal instructions through two-way radio communications; ability to provide friendly customer service and conduct positive, courteous and respectful interaction with the public. Education: High school diploma or equivalent Ability to drive and comfortably operate any and all support and transit vehicles. Preferred Qualifications: At least 8-20 months of experience as a fixed-route transit bus driver or over-the-road charter bus driver is preferred. Considerable customer service experience is highly preferred. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with Passengers and Air Brakes endorsements, with a good driving record reflected by possessing a positive point balance on license. Ability to operate a transit vehicle. Knowledge of University Transit service routes and procedures. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Safe operation also includes repetitive motion with both ankles/feet, with both possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator (right), and turn signal controls (left) present on the transit bus units within the Parking and Transportation fleet. Boarding/alighting the transit bus requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the transit bus requires bending, lifting, and carrying. All of these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position. Work performed during special events and as part of servicing the equipment requires standing, walking, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying.
