Alakaina Family of Companies is Hiring a Toxicology Subject Matter Expert (SME) Near Dayton, OH

Kāpili Services, LLC has a potential need for a Toxicology Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide support for the 711th Human Performance Wing at Wright Patterson Air Force Base (AFB), Dayton, Ohio. 

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide cognitive neuroscience research support and shall identify new research ideas, serve as principal investigator, and advise team members on appropriate specific aims, methodologies, and assessments, as well as generate novel evaluation techniques to meet complex challenges.
  • Serve as principal/co-principal investigator on new or current research efforts and protocols. The employee shall develop, submit and execute research aligned with the strategic priorities of the 711HPW. They shall review relevant scientific literature, technical reports from other DOD groups and attend scientific conferences or other technical meetings to stay current on the state of the art for medical and human performance research.
  • Produce, assess, coordinate, and submit protocol related documents to both local and military Institutional Review Boards (IRB). Assure compliance of general and study specific regulatory related processes with Standard Operating Procedures, as well as HRPO, FDA, and applicable regulations for the reporting of events to regulatory agencies. Assist with establishing data sharing agreements with groups’ managing databases/repositories and assure PII/PHI compliance with HIPAA and other applicable regulations. Prepare progress reports for the IRB and provide auditing trails to assure protocol compliance. Maintain annual IRB approvals, amendments, and safety events, process data queries and ensure resolution. Identify problems and/or inconsistencies and monitor subjects’ progress to include documentation and reporting of adverse events; recommend corrective action as appropriate. Assist in preparation of amendments to protocols and/or modifications to study design as appropriate.
  • Compile and track research budgets, logistics and expenses for government approval. They shall manage the ordering of supplies & equipment needed for research projects and keep track of pending orders. They shall work with Research Area and Product Line leads, as well as program managers, to ensure that the cost, schedule, and performance of research efforts are executed in a timely fashion.
  • Review and extract data from existing military and civilian databases for research and quality improvement. The contractor employee shall assist with establishing agreements with internal and external data sources and repositories and shall maintain access as appropriate to support research.
  • Coordinate the development of data collection tools, questionnaires, databases, and the application of research techniques. Further, the contractor employee shall administer and interpret the cognitive assessment tools. Assist in writing procedures manuals for data collection and coding. Design and accomplish reports, updates for government agencies quarterly, and upon request.
  • Independently, or with minimal assistance, write or collaborate on writing Research Grants and supporting documentation in accordance with the guidance/instructions provided in the solicitation. Prepare oral presentations or written reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Prepare briefing charts for 711 HPW/RHB leadership and staff in accordance with specified format that captures the cost, schedule, and performance status of each project. Draft and/or review written submissions for publication and or professional presentations. Participate in the annual Program Management Review.
  • Oversee design and execution of laboratory and field studies to improve measurements of occupational exposures.
  • Prepare study proposals and protocols, review activities and study data for quality and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures based on mission requirements supporting R&D efforts.
  • Actively contribute within a technical team, and lead tasks.
  • Document work, publish papers, make professional presentations, and support the lead author on major reports/documents supporting Air Force Medical Service policy.
  • Train, mentor, and work with lower level technicians, scientists, and engineers.
  • Design, conduct, and oversee a wide variety of chemical, biological and radiological assessments, utilizing both widely acceptable practices and novel techniques.
  • Draft proposals and technical reports, prepare high-level administrative and technical documents, including information papers, program area strategies, courses of alternatives, technical summaries, literature reviews, and analyses of DoD directives.
  • Provide scientific, technical, and programmatic support to RHB researchers, as well as overseeing design and execution of laboratory sample analysis and field studies.
  • Plan specific objectives for the overall program, including required innovations and improvisations, along with developing program plans.
  • Prioritize program investigations, and articulate scope and milestones in terms of project management elements.
  • Ensure clear and consistent understanding of activities in portfolio are available to senior leadership at Department, USAFSAM, Wing, AFRL, and Air Staff levels.
  • Interface with users composed of AF, DoD, other Government agencies, and international organizations.
  • Travel to customer, collaborator, and stakeholder location(s); field test and demonstration area(s); management reviews, conferences, and meetings; and other destinations in the CONUS and OCONUS, as needed.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Possess a minimum of a PhD in any Toxicology, Environmental Science and Engineering, Chemistry, or Biology.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Have a minimum 10 years of experience in performing toxicological related work from toxicological assessments, in vitro method development and development of Physiological Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models.
  • Possess at least 5 years’ experience with the structure and processes of military health medical research and development.
  • Demonstrate an ability to write technical reports.
  • Demonstrate skills in in vitro, in silico and in vivo methods into safety assessment.
  • Display understanding in structure activity understanding chemical and familiarity with omics (multi-disciplinary field which includes genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics).
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and design research studies and protocols.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, to include the ability to communicate orally to individuals and groups of people, face-to-face and by phone in an office setting or at conferences, video-conference and teleconferences, as well as the ability to communicate in writing for a variety of purposes including research proposals, reports, analysis, and publications.
  • Possess the ability to work well with a team of subject matter experts, with minimal oversight, and the ability to organize projects of broad scope and objective without the use of established methods and procedures.
  • Have the knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft Business Suite, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project, required to produce documents, correspondence, briefings, and spreadsheets.
  • Must have a signed Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in place with their company based on the potential access to confidential, proprietary, and/or sensitive information. The NDA shall be provided to the Government Program Manager by start of performance.

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must be able to pass a Tier 1 (SF85) background check.
