Agricultural Research Service is Hiring a Research Mathematical Statistician Near Columbia, MO

Summary
The incumbent is assigned to the Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research Unit, located on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, Missouri.The incumbent will conduct crosscutting research in Bayesian hierarchical spatial modeling and machine learning to improve estimation and prediction of soil carbon and other soil health indicators at the continental scale.

Duties
  • Develop and implement novel and innovative statistical methodologies to improve the Soil Health Assessment Protocol and Evaluation (SHAPE) tool.
  • Assess soil carbon and soil health using statistical and machine learning methodologies including Bayesian models and spatially explicit approaches.
  • Incorporate new datasets to improve model spatial coverage and representation.
  • Develop and incorporate novel statistical methodology to handle complex data distributions.

Qualifications
This position requires a Ph.D in statistics/mathematics or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.Preferred interests and experience include hierarchical spatial modeling, machine learning, Bayesian methodology and computation, dimension reduction and analysis of high-dimensional datasets, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience working with large datasets for applied science outcomes is preferred.

Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.
or
  1. Combination of education and experienceat least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
