Medical College of Wisconsin is Hiring a Pediatric Critical Care Children's WI - Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Near Milwaukee, WI

With a 72-bed pediatric critical care unit , one of the nation's largest, you will join a highly trained intensive care unit team who treat children with serious medical or surgical care needs.

Position Description:

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support the Pediatric Critical Care services located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Childrens Wisconsin .

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is an academic partner Children's Wisconsin, the regions only independent healthcare system dedicated solely to the health and well-being of children. This free-standing 306-bed children's hospital ranks as one of the top children's hospitals in the United States.

In this role you will:

Patient Care

Examine, treat, and document acute and chronic care of children with complex and critical health conditions in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Order, interpret, and record results of clinical tests and report results to physician team. Prescribe medications and make recommendations for other therapeutic treatments.

  • Collaborate with a physician or physician team to assess and treat the acute and chronic health care needs of complex and critically ill or injured children.
  • Rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • A wide degree of creativity and autonomy is expected.

Teaching/Education

Instruction (formal and/or informal) of nurses and nursing students, medical students, residents, parents and other health care professionals.

Quality improvement and Research

Support section research activities and quality improvement initiatives through participation

Position Requirements:


Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse Masters Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant Bachelors Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Minimum Requirements:

Advanced Practice Nurse Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Wisconsin RN License
Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License
Acute Care Pediatrics certification
Current BLS & PALS

Physician Assistant Wisconsin Physician Assistant License
Certification by NCCPA
Current BLS & PALS

Preferred Experience:

  • Two years of nursing or physician assistant experience in direct patient care for children, with proven ability to communicate well with children, parents, and physicians under frequently stressful circumstances.
  • Previous experience in critical care nursing or comparable clinical practice; previous experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with subspecialty concentration in acute/chronic or critical care; previous experience with technology-dependent children.
  • Familiarity with advanced concepts, practices, and procedures within pediatric critical care medicine.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and attentiveness to detail required. Ability to communicate clearly and logically both verbally and in writing. Demonstrate accuracy and an attention to detail. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences clearly and concisely. Demonstrated high level of analytical ability to resolve complex patient care problems, administrative problems, and research issues. Interpersonal skills which frequently involve collaborating with bedside nurses, peers and supervisors, physicians, and administrators on policy and procedural issues.
