Description
The managing editor is a versatile and highly skilled editor and strategic thinker who digs deep into content. With the support and QA of the editorial director, the managing editor heavily supports content needs, owning certain streams from submission through delivery. The managing editor doesn’t own the client relationship, but participates in client communications as needed to support account needs. The managing editor could also manage in-house or freelance editorial staff, as needed. 
Reporting into the editorial director, this role will maintain oversight into editorial strategy and quality expectations for their accounts. The managing editor plays a multifunctional role with the ability to own certain areas as needed. 
Key Responsibilities
  • Editing. Own editing content end-to-end, evaluating it upon submission against client goals and quality, copy and line editing, proofing/delivering to client, and managing revisions.
  • Content planning . Possess a firm understanding of the credit management system and ability to execute against content plans. 
  • Brand knowledge. Possess a firm understanding of each client’s market/brand, their target audiences, and the value proposition supported by the content and how it connects to business objectives. 
  • Contributor management. Own account-specific contributor management, including recruitment, onboarding/offboarding, offering assignments, feedback and training.
  • Ideation. Execute editorial strategy through ideation support and assignment summaries creation. 
  • Strategy. Support editorial strategy tasks, such as competitive analysis, content recommendations, discovery calls, content creation guideline creation, and other onboarding/kickoff activities. 
  • Client communication. Participates in client meetings and communications as necessary. 
  • Management. Manage in-house or freelance editor support and hold them accountable for quality standards and delivery expectations.
  • Team L&D. Support team-wide initiatives like editorial/account workshops, best practice resources, and other forms of shared learning and team engagement. 
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of experience developmental editing and line editing and at least one year working directly with writers
  • Minimum of 3 years working on content strategy, editorial strategy, and large-scale content production
  • Experience managing freelancers or other external content production role(s)
  • Experience working in a client-facing position
  • Excellent spelling and grammar skills with an exceptional eye for detail
  • Expert knowledge of both The Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press Stylebook
  • Exceptional understanding of what a writer needs to submit quality work
  • Experience supporting the production and delivery of time-sensitive written content
  • Ability to delegate tasks and manage deadlines.
  • Excellent time management and project management skills with the ability to effectively support concurrent projects and adapt to changing priorities and timelines
  • A curious mind that is willing to learn about and understand diverse industries and audiences
  • Superior communication skills 
  • An editing test will be required of candidates
