This job can be described as:

Assist the supervisor in coordinating the activities of team members in the machining process, as well as performing high-level and complex machining work. Utilize experience and knowledge of equipment, procedures and product specifications. Assist with the training of new employees and ensure quality of products. Operates Numerical Control machine tools including, but not limited to, lathes, millers, EDM, etc, as needed to manufacture metal components. One or more machines may be running at the same time. Inspects work and performs quality checks to ensure conformance to engineering drawings. Will record data for SPC, either manually or electronically. Works as part of a team, and must be willing to support quality and production goals. Cross checks other cell operator's work for first piece inspection and advises of any quality issues. In addition must be able to set up and run his/her own cell, may be required to assist and/or train other operators in the set-up and running of another cell. Sets up and operates a full range of conventional machine shop equipment, including lathes, millers, Bridgeports boring mills, in addition to setting up, programming, and operating CNC equipment to perform work involving moderate to complex set-ups and close to critical tolerances on all material types. Performs complex and diversified machining operations. Inspects work and performs quality checks to ensure conformance to engineering drawings. Cross checks fellow machinists and advises of any quality issues. Directly communicates with Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering teams regarding design and programming questions/issues. Works as part of a team - must be willing to support the team and collaborate to support quality and production goals. Will train other machinists as required.

Job Model: On-Site

On-Site positions will require employees to work on-site for each of their scheduled shifts.

A typical day at work would include:

Assist supervisor with helping to support safety requirements amongst employees and in the department including wearing appropriate PPE and following all safety procedures.

Build positive working relationships with co-workers to achieve productivity. Lead the team by example and maintain high personal standards of job performance.

Requires understanding of the operation of all CNC cells in order to trouble shoot and provide necessary direction.

Serve as an escalation point for machining issues, and use expertise and knowledge to guide co workers to effective solutions.

Operates Numerical Control machine tools in a cellular environment, including lathes and millers.

Operates machine controller to down load (electronically transfer) part program files.

Performs work from operation and planning packages, which include process sheets, tooling lists, sets up sheets, program code and blueprints.

Coordinates with Production Planners and Supervisors to develop daily production schedules and manufacturing priorities for 1st & 2nd shift to ensure products are delivered on time.

Understands and can interpret engineering drawings and customer requirements to develop CNC programs; performs CNC set-ups and can make program adjustments to ensure parts meet print.

Inspects work and performs Quality checks and records data for SPC as required. Makes necessary changes to tooling, offsets, feeds and speeds to produce in spec parts.

Exercises independent judgment in determining adjustments to be made to machinery to produce parts to meet drawing dimensions. Must support Chesterton Quality Policies.

Maintains safe and clean work area on a daily basis. Keeps informed of and follows machine shop safety policies and procedures.

Performs major set ups that include changing fixtures on the miller, changing tool holders on both lathes and millers, and make electronic tooling offsets to adjust tool position and piece part characteristics.

Work involves moderate to complex set-ups and close to critical tolerances on various material types.

Converts, edits, and may add lines of code to programs as required.

Directs the activities of others, Provides training plans to various non-exempt manufacturing employees.

Acts on behalf of the supervisor in his/her absence.

Works under general direction. No instructions needed on routine work. General guidance provided.

Manufactures complex seals & components.

Advanced knowledge and understanding of all standard equipment in machine shop.

Performs diversified and complex machining operations. Works on the most difficult assignments.

Exercises independent judgment in determining fabrication methods to be used. Frequently required to improvise and to use shop mathematics.

May contribute and advise engineering regarding redesign.

Performs routine maintenance on equipment.

Works directly with Machinist to implement continuous improvement methods.

Experience you need coming into this job:

Apprentice training desirable.

15 years related experience in manufacturing and/or machine shop environment.

Ability to read and comprehend complex engineering drawings and blueprints.

Ability to set up and operate a full range of conventional machine shop equipment in three or more CNC machining work centers.

Advanced mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.

Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written, verbal instructions, and sequence of events.

Ability to exercise independent judgment.

Advanced CNC skills.

Ability to function as part of a team.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with and train others.

Ability to work under pressure and work well with others.

Basic reading and writing skills.

Ability to work in a moderately uncomfortable environment; i.e., extreme heat, and noise.

Ability to train other operators as required.

Ability to provide guidance and direction to others, and to lead team members to solution.

Advanced understanding of shop floor mathematics.

Advanced understanding of quality control principles.

Ability to work as a team player.

Ability to use full range of measurement tools.

Ability to work in a machine shop environment.

Ability to act as Lead when required.

Ability to determine Shop Order workflow when required, IE Shop Schedule.

Ability to wear steel toe safety shoes/boots and to wear safety eyewear required Exposure to high levels of noise and temperature in the work environment. While performing the job employee may be required to wear a respirator.
