ABOUT THE COMPANY
A-CAP is a rapidly growing organization that owns and operates multiple insurance companies and ancillary insurance businesses and has over $10 billion of total invested assets. This opening is with the holding company, which primarily performs asset management, actuarial, accounting, and other oversight functions on behalf of A-CAP's insurers and third-party clients. This group also provides strategic and operational support to A-CAP's portfolio companies/subsidiaries, proactively formulates new investment strategies, oversees external financing and acquisition activities, and provides modeling support for insurer liabilities and capital. On the insurance product side, A-CAP's primary lines of business are traditional fixed and equity-indexed annuities, with additional business in whole life insurance, Medicare supplement, and hospital indemnity products. A-CAP insurers originate over $2 billion of new premium annually.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a key member of the Finance team, we are seeking a reliable, hands-on and detail-oriented Insurance Controller to lead the company's annuity, life insurance and reinsurance accounting activities, support the preparation of financial statements that adhere to regulatory and accounting guidelines. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Insurance Controller will oversee all aspects of annuity, life insurance and reinsurance accounting in the company. They will ensure the company's accounting and financial processes are managed correctly, meet established standards, and promote accurate financial reporting and effective controls.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
  • Manages all annuity, life insurance and reinsurance accounting functions including but not limited to cash management, A/P, A/R, Balance Sheet reconciliations, general ledger, month-end reporting, and financial statements.
  • Assures accurate and timely financial and management reporting in accordance with STAT, GAAP, tax, and management reporting requirements.
  • Prepares financial statements and related reports including but not limited to balance sheets, income statements, cash-flow reports, budgets, and variance analysis.
  • Provides comprehensive financial updates to senior managers by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting appropriate data points.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains financial controls and guidelines.
  • Identifies and implements business process improvements and new accounting procedures to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Develops and enforces internal controls to maximize protection of company assets, policies, procedures, and workflows.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Directly supervises ~10 employees within the Annuity and Life Insurance Accounting and Reinsurance Accounting departments.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing works appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Oversees and supports accounting team with dynamic leadership that creates an environment of trust and productivity.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business. Master's degree preferred.
  • CPA or CMA certification is strongly preferred.
  • Extensive understanding of Statutory and Reinsurance Accounting.
  • 15 years' experience, with 5 as a Controller within the Insurance industry.
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulations.
  • Big 4/ Public Accounting experience is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated track record in managing and developing people. Building and sustaining a strong team in a remote first environment is a critical success factor.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., 40 hours weekly, or as otherwise arranged with the manager of the department.
