Summary
The Large Animal Clinic (LAC) Veterinary Technician is a position within the College of Veterinary Medicine's Animal Health Institute.This individual's primary duty is providing veterinary technician services in support of the LAC's food animal service.In addition to patient care, this position is involved with the care of teaching herds housed at the LAC.Additionally, this individual must take initiative and assume responsibility for completion of assigned tasks, and must work alone or in the company of others, either with or without direct supervision.The LAC Veterinary Technician will function as an integral member of the animal health care team, and must support and advance the important role of the LAC in the clinical education of veterinary students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support LAC ambulatory faculty and students in the delivery of patient care and herd health operations.
  • Provide care for cattle and horses housed at the LAC as needed.
  • Ensure that ambulatory vehicles are stocked with drugs, supplies, and equipment necessary for field work with large animals.
  • Assist in restraining animals for procedures and treatments
  • Gain proficiency with StringSoft electronic medical record program, and ensure that caseload statistics are captured both at the individual animal and herd levels.
  • Follow husbandry protocols in accordance with USDA and IACUC standards
  • Assist in maintaining supplies and equipment in treatment areas
  • Process laundry/linen as needed to assure adequate and neat supply at all times
  • Assist faculty on an as-needed basis with student instruction
  • Other duties as may be assigned
General Knowledge
  • Know the basics of large animal handling and restraint.
  • Be familiar with common medical and surgical procedures performed in the field in large animal practice.
  • Be familiar with the use of equipment commonly used in large animal practice.
  • Understand principles of therapy of common large animal medical conditions.
  • Understand biosecurity protocols needed for work in animal production facilities.
  • Follow OSHA standards and be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly.
  • Use proper medical terminology and spelling when speaking and writing.

Education and/or Experience
High School diploma or GED is required.Must have a minimum of 2-4 years of experience working with large animal patient care.Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) licensure from the state of Arizona is preferred.Must have the ability to function as a member of a large animal healthcare team with a collaborative mindset.Must have excellent customer service skills with the ability to develop rapport with students, faculty and clients.Must be compliant with all LAC policies and procedures.Ability to speak Spanish is desired.
Computer Skills
The individual must have the ability to learn the String Soft Veterinary management system.
