Zutari: Co-creating an engineered impact.
Zutari is a well-established, management-owned engineering firm with almost 90 years' experience. As human-centred engineering consultants and advisors, we are trusted by our clients, business partners, communities and other stakeholders across Africa.
We co-create engineering solutions that have a positive impact and improve people's lives. Zutari values inclusion and recognises the importance of a diverse, talented workforce, believing that people need other people to succeed.
What kind of talent do we pursue?
We employ people with the right attitude and a positive mindset, who are motivated by doing the right thing, getting things done and share a sense of urgency. People who have an impact in our teams and broader community. People who think differently and connect with those around them to co-create new opportunities and leave a meaningful legacy.
Role overview
The BIM modeller role is central to achieving a fully complete and coordinated design. Ideally, the engineer produces the design, and the BIM modeller then builds the model of what will be constructed in the natural environment. The BIM modeller can therefore also be described as the virtual or digital builder. The role is accountable for capturing all design data in an accurate, contextual 3D model. The 3D model file acts as the information container which increasingly constitutes the final design deliverable. The BIM Modeller role can be performed by specialist BIM modellers, technicians, technologists, or qualified engineers with the required discipline knowledge and BIM skills.
Role responsibilities
- Execute the 3D digital build with the required authoring software (Revit) to accurately capture the design and all design related data, and to enable efficient model-based drawing production (e.g., structural GA/profile plans, sections/elevations, schedules, reinforcement drawings and steel detailing/connection intent drawings where within scope). Produce computations where qualified to do so.
- Pay careful consideration to the context, relevant interfaces through daily interference checks, and buildability of the model elements during the digital build, ensuring the model is suitable for accurate 2D outputs derived from the 3D model.
- Work with the BIM Coordinator to ensure the Zutari baseline LOIN is achieved by using the correct object templates, libraries, and config files during the digital build, including agreed view templates, annotation standards and sheet setup to support consistent drawing outputs.
- Work with the engineer/designer to ensure that all required metadata not automatically generated is manually added to the digital build elements, demonstrating exceptional attention to detail and a real commitment to data accuracy, including information that supports tagging, scheduling and drawing completeness.
- Achieve ongoing project adherence to the BEP/EIRs, including requirements for both model deliverables and drawing outputs.
Minimum requirements
- 3–4 years industry experience in Built Environment projects (e.g., commercial, mixed-use, public buildings, transport buildings and upgrades, data centres/mission-critical).
- Problem solver with advanced modelling, federation & information management skills.
- Multidisciplinary building modelling skills highly desirable (structural coordination with architectural and MEP models).
- Skilled in Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) and/or equivalent CDE workflows.
- Knowledge of ISO 19650 and BS EN 1741 desirable
- Coding/automation capability desirable (e.g., Dynamo and Python) to improve modelling efficiency, quality checking, and repetitive-task automation.
We believe that a diverse workforce is key to our business success. We seek the best people for our jobs based on their skills, qualifications, and experience. We embrace the principle of equal opportunity in employment, and we work towards eliminating all forms of unlawful discrimination in our employment practices. In support of diversity and the equal opportunity principle, preference will be given to individuals from designated groups within South Africa.
