This position will remain open on a rolling basis. We are prioritizing finding the right candidate over filling the role on a fixed timeline.

  • Trainees new to OSP fiber optics: Starting at $22/hour (as Fiber Optic Technician Trainee)
  • Hires with relevant experience: $25-28 /hour depending on relevant experience
  • Approximately 40 hours per week dependent on workload. Our operations team typically works four 10-hour days per week (Monday-Thursday).
  • Applicants must be aged 25 or older to operate company commercial vehicles.

Description

As Fiber Optic Technician I, you will install and repair residential and commercial fiber drops and residential and commercial inside/outside cabling. You will also perform customer-facing tasks including installation and setup of residential/commercial fiber service and Wi-Fi.

For certain tasks including rural fiber drops, you may sometimes work with the help of an Assistant Fiber Technician. Once fully trained, the Fiber Optic Technician I is expected to be capable of working via bucket truck, ladder, and gaffing.

This job can be physically demanding, involves working in all types of terrain in all weather conditions, and requires excellent problem-solving skills. You will help us bring world-class fiber internet to rural and low-income regions of New York’s Southern Tier.

Our work involves daily travel in company vehicles within an approximate 1-hour radius of Ithaca, NY.

We compete with companies five times our size by maintaining very high standards in quality of work, documentation, and communication with our network operator customers. As a member of our team, you will be expected to help uphold these standards.

You will be responsible for maintaining an organized work environment, which includes restocking and washing your truck, reporting any issues or low inventory immediately to management, and maintaining detailed project documentation. All projects are dispatched and documented via mobile apps, so proficiency with smartphone use is required.

Qualifications

Experience

  • One year work experience in telecom, construction, building maintenance, or other hands-on field preferred

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience
  • Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record within company required standards

Physical Requirements

The following physical requirements describe essential job functions and may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation. All work must be performed in accordance with training and safety standards.

The candidate must be able to:

  • Use common tools such as drills, hammers, and screwdrivers
  • Operate technical and sometimes delicate equipment including fusion splicers and OTDRs (training will be provided)
  • Use a smartphone extensively for documentation, navigation, and communication
  • Carry, climb, and operate extension ladders (approx. 32 ft high and 80 pounds) within the maximum weight limitations of that equipment
  • Climb poles using gaffs, climbing belt, and safety ropes as needed within the maximum weight limitations of that equipment (training will be provided)
  • Perform close visual work with fine, color-coded optic fibers
  • Read and interpret general system layouts and maps
  • Work in all types of terrain in all weather conditions while carrying equipment
  • Perform job from high places (i.e. utility poles and roofs)
  • Work while standing 50-70% of the time
