Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of construction equipment used in heavy civil and underground utility projects, including water, sewer, and storm drainage systems. This role requires precision excavation, adherence to safety standards, and coordination with field crews to ensure productivity and compliance with Florida regulations. Pay is dependent upon experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, dozers, backhoes, and trenchers for underground utility installation
- Perform trenching, grading, backfilling, and site preparation for water, sewer, and storm systems
- Read and interpret construction plans, grade stakes, and utility locates
- Work closely with pipe crews to safely install underground utilities
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, including trench safety and excavation requirements (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P)
- Maintain safe trench conditions including proper sloping, benching, or shoring
- Verify underground utility locates and assist with coordination of Sunshine 811 tickets prior to excavation
- Perform daily equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance
- Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, and equipment issues
- Assist with hand digging when required around existing utilities
- Maintain clean and organized job sites
Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience operating heavy equipment in civil construction
- Experience with underground utilities (water, sewer, storm) required
- Knowledge of trench safety, soil types, and excavation practices
- Ability to read blueprints, grade stakes, and laser levels
- Valid Florida driver’s license (CDL preferred but not required)
- Strong understanding of job site safety protocols
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in Florida weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain)
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to sit, stand, climb, and operate equipment for extended periods
Work Environment
- Heavy civil construction job sites throughout Central Florida
- Exposure to heavy equipment, noise, dust, and varying terrain conditions
- Fast-paced environment requiring teamwork and communication

Pay: $18.00 - $32.00 per hour
