Job Title: Design Release Engineer – Automotive Closures
Location: Dearborn, MI
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 4 Days Onsite
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Design Release Engineer to support the design validation, engineering development, and release of automotive exterior closure components. This role will focus on front and rear closure systems, including hood, doors, decklid/liftgate, and adjoining components.
The engineer will work closely with Studio/Design, suppliers, manufacturing, and cross-functional engineering teams to develop feasible and production-ready designs while maintaining styling intent, fit and finish, quality, and engineering requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and facilitate DFMEA activities with cross-functional engineering teams, identifying failure modes, risks, causes, and mitigation actions.
- Review designs for compliance with corporate Design Rules, engineering standards, and applicable requirements.
- Develop and maintain design verification and evidence packages, including test reports, analysis results, DFMEA outputs, and engineering sign-offs.
- Prepare and manage Supplier Corrective Action Forms (SCAFs) for supplier nonconformances and corrective actions.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for suppliers regarding design intent, quality issues, and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with Studio and Design teams to translate styling surfaces into feasible and releasable closure geometry.
- Use NX or CATIA to review and develop 3D models, drawings, and engineering concepts.
- Support development of closure structures, including hinges, latches, seals, reinforcements, and adjoining components.
- Perform CAD measurements, interference/clash checks, and design reviews to identify and resolve engineering conflicts.
- Apply GD&T and drawing standards to support proper fit, finish, and manufacturing requirements.
- Participate in design reviews and program gate milestones, ensuring engineering documentation is complete and audit-ready.
- Support design optimization through analytical and physical assessments while considering crash load cases, regulatory requirements, manufacturability, and craftsmanship.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience in automotive design release, product development, or component engineering.
- Experience with DFMEA and design risk analysis.
- Ability to take and verify measurements in CAD.
- Experience working with NX, CATIA, or similar 3D CAD software.
- Understanding of GD&T, engineering drawings, and design standards.
- Experience collaborating with Studio/Design teams and suppliers.
- Strong understanding of automotive component design, fit and finish, and manufacturing/assembly considerations.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and releasing automotive closure systems, including hood, doors, decklid/liftgate, or related exterior components.
- Experience translating Class-A/styling surfaces into engineering geometry.
- Experience with parametric 3D surface/solid modeling.
- Experience performing clash/interference checks against mating components.
- Knowledge of automotive manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Experience with supplier corrective actions, quality issues, and engineering change processes.
- Familiarity with crash load case requirements and applicable federal automotive regulations.
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
Work Arrangement
Hybrid – 4 days per week onsite in Dearborn, MI.
