Location: Tahoe / Truckee / Incline Village / Reno
Zachary Engineering is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join our team specializing in high-end residential and custom mountain homes throughout the Tahoe region. This role is ideal for a structural engineer who thrives in collaborative environments, values constructability, and enjoys working closely with architects and contractors on unique, design-driven projects.
About the Role
As a Project Engineer, you will take ownership of residential structural design projects from schematic design through construction, coordinating directly with architects, builders, and clients. You will work on custom homes, remodels, and hillside/mountain structures that require thoughtful engineering and real-world problem solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and engineer residential structural systems including wood, steel, concrete, and hybrid structures
- Prepare structural calculations, drawings, and specifications for permit and construction
- Coordinate closely with architects, contractors, and consultants throughout design and construction
- Lead project execution, schedules, and internal coordination
- Provide construction support, RFIs, and field observations as needed
- Ensure compliance with applicable California and Nevada building codes
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to office standards and workflows
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- 5 years of experience in residential structural engineering
- Strong experience with wood-framed structures; steel and concrete experience preferred
- Proficiency in structural design software and engineering analysis tools
- Ability to produce clear, well-organized calculations and drawings
- Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with architects and contractors
- Familiarity with mountain, snow load, seismic, and hillside conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- California PE and/or Nevada PE (or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe)
- Experience with custom, high-end residential projects
- Experience in snow-load regions and complex site conditions
- Proficiency with SketchUp for structural coordination (highly valued)
- Experience managing projects independently
