Job Summary
The Shelter Benefit (DSS) Specialist provides vital support and advocacy to domestic violence survivors in our shelter. This role includes assisting clients with Department of Social Services (DSS) paperwork, coordinating benefits, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring clients' basic needs are met. The DSS Specialist also provides emotional support, facilitates access to community resources, and fosters connections with local agencies.
FLSA Category: Non-Exempt
Compensation: $23 - $26 Per Hour
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide trauma-informed guidance and support to survivors of domestic violence.
- Maintain knowledge of legal and social service systems and community resources.
- Assist clients in completing DSS applications and action plans.
- Coordinate with DSS and internal finance teams regarding client arrivals, departures, and billing.
- Stay informed about DSS benefits for domestic violence survivors.
- Foster relationships with Schenectady County DSS and other relevant agencies.
- Maintain client files, documentation, and reports in compliance with agency policies.
- Transport clients to DSS appointments as needed.
- Answer hotline calls and provide crisis intervention, support, and referrals.
- Conduct client intake and orientation to shelter guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED, Associate's Degree, or Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Social Work, or a related field, with 3–14 years of relevant experience in domestic violence, crisis intervention, human services, or social services.
- Knowledge of domestic violence, crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, and social service resources.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, database management, and internet use.
- Ability to work with diverse populations and maintain confidentiality.
- Valid NYS driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to drive agency vehicles.
Physical & Additional Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and navigate stairs.
- Periods of sitting, standing, and reaching in an office and shelter setting.
- Complete all role required checks.
