Description:
The Lifeguard/WSI is responsible for the direct care, safety and teaching of children at the camp waterfront area. Responsibilities include but may not be limited to the following:
- Be responsible for the overall condition of the complete waterfront area. This includes the care and repair of safety equipment, small craft, sand & water toys, and swim aides. It also means keeping the area clean and free from debris;
- Participate actively with other staff in the planning process, including the development and implementation of written lesson plans and well-planned instructional and recreational swim activities;
- Directly nurture and encourage children by providing them with individualized swim instruction using a variety of presentation and learning experiences appropriate to their age;
- Maintain individual swim records on the progress of each camper as well as accurate records and statistical information that may be required by your Supervisor. Complete and submit written reports as assigned;
- Recognize and protect children from any hazards that are a threat to their physical safety and their emotional well being;
- Be aware of all state requirements and emergency procedures and notify the Waterfront Director if you notice a violation or have concerns;
- Assist in the planning and implementation of all rainy day activities;
- Participate in the evaluation of self, supervisors, campers and program;
- Participate in ongoing safety and rescue training that will increase your aquatic skills and competence and attend scheduled staff meetings.
- Submit written reports to the Camp Director as requested
Essential Functions:
- Must be able to get and maintain control of groups of 10-20 campers;
- Must be able to be heard over the voices of 10-20 campers;
- Must be able to skillfully execute basic strokes of swimming;
- Must be able to evaluate camper’s swim ability through observation;
- Must be physically able to conduct a swimming rescue
- Must have completed 11th grade
- Must complete all pre-camp training sessions
- Current First Aid & CPR certificates (FPR)
- Current Lifeguard & WSI certificates
- Team-oriented with a commitment to excellence and professional ethics;
- Experience & skills working with groups of children
- Highly motivated to learn and practice new skills
- Strong desire to work with children in an outdoor setting
