Status: Full-time, Exempt

Salary: $105,000 - $120,000

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer


About YWCA Central Carolinas

YWCA Central Carolinas is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Our transitional housing programs serve up to sixty-six women and ten families facing homelessness each day by providing safe, affordable transitional housing and comprehensive case management services on our Park Road campus. In our four Youth Learning Centers in two counties, YWCA operates affordable, accessible literacy-based programs for K-5 grade students, after school and all day during the summer. In our racial justice and advocacy work, we host forums and events to educate and mobilize our community to combat systems of oppression. Finally, YWCA’s co-ed fitness center empowers individuals in their wellness journey and connects them to our mission. YWCA Central Carolinas has served the Charlotte region since 1902, evolving to meet the changing needs of our community. 


Position Objectives

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) ensures the smooth and effective functioning of YWCA Central Carolinas by overseeing organizational systems, financial management, human resources and day-to-day administration. This role provides the infrastructure that allows programs and fundraising efforts to thrive, aligning people, processes and resources to support the mission. The COO partners closely with the CEO and leadership team to strengthen organizational capacity, ensure compliance, manage risk and foster a culture of equity, efficiency and accountability.


Organizational Management & Systems

• Oversees the daily operations and ensures alignment with organizational mission and goals.

• Develops and maintains operational policies, procedures and workflow systems.

• Manages databases, technology systems and tools to improve efficiency.


Finance & Administration

• Partners with finance staff/consultants to prepare budgets and financial reports.

• Monitors cash flow, expenses and compliance with funder requirements.

• Supports accurate, timely grant and contract reporting.


Human Resources & Talent Management

• Leads recruitment, onboarding, performance management and professional development processes.

• Ensures HR practices comply with employment laws and reflects organizational values.

• Champions workplace culture that emphasizes equity, collaboration and accountability.


Facilities & Infrastructure

• Manages physical office spaces and program facilities to ensure safety, accessibility and functionality.

• Oversees vendor relationships, contracts, leases and service agreements.


Risk Management & Compliance

• Ensures organizational compliance with legal, regulatory and insurance requirements.

• Identifies and mitigates risks to protect people, property and reputation.


Leadership & Board Support

• Provides operational insights and data to support decision-making.

• Partners with the CEO on strategic planning and implementation.

• Supports board committees related to finance, audit and operations.


Cross-Departmental Coordination

• Collaborates across programs, fundraising and communications to align operational support.

• Serves as a connector to strengthen coordination and accountability across teams.


Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Business or other applicable degree required. A minimum of eight years of leadership experience in business operations required. Experience overseeing a multi-department team required. Nonprofit experience strongly preferred. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Able to effectively address overlapping projects and deadlines.

Frequently required to remain stationary while working at a computer and perform repetitive motion tasks that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Must be able to operate standard office equipment and keyboard. Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, push, pull, reach with hands and arms. May occasionally need to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
