Position Title: Security Officer
Reports To: Senior Director of Facilities & Security Services
FLSA Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt


The YWCA Central Alabama Security Services Department is actively seeking a committed Security Officer to play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of our facilities. In this position, you will be responsible for patrolling YWCA-owned buildings, parking lots, and other premises, ensuring that all areas remain secure, hazard-free, and devoid of suspicious or unauthorized individuals.

As a key member of our team, you will conduct thorough patrols of assigned areas, with a particular focus on identifying and addressing problem zones. Your helpful nature will shine as you assist visitors by providing clear directions and information about various departments within the YWCA Organization.

Position Summary:

The Security Officer position at YWCA Central Alabama is essential for establishing a safe and welcoming environment within our office and residential facilities. This opportunity entails monitoring security systems, conducting inspections of the premises, and maintaining vigilance regarding all activities occurring on-site. Your heightened awareness and proactive approach will significantly enhance the security landscape, providing peace of mind to all stakeholders.

Essential Functions:

 

  • Own the responsibility for the safety and security of designated areas during your scheduled shifts.
  • Vigilantly monitor surveillance cameras to ensure the highest level of security across the premises.
  • Swiftly respond to alarms and any safety or security threats that arise on-site.
  • Proactively patrol and monitor hallways, stairwells, and public or unsupervised areas to guarantee the well-being of residents and staff.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the premises to identify any irregularities or unauthorized individuals.
  • Spot potential security risks and take decisive action to address them.
  • Secure assistance in complex situations by promptly activating alarms or making necessary phone calls. Safeguard the community by escalating emergencies or encounters with
  • individuals carrying weapons to law enforcement as needed, maintaining strong communication with them regarding suspected criminal activity.
  • Keep housing staff informed of any emergencies or unusual situations that could pose a threat to residents.
  • Collaborate with maintenance staff to secure areas during maintenance emergencies effectively.
  • Minimize loss and damage by reporting irregularities and firmly informing violators about policies and procedures regarding their behavior on the premises.
  • Confidently advise trespassers to leave the premises and communicate the involvement of law enforcement when necessary.
  • Compile thorough written reports on accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety hazards, and fire risks, ensuring timely documentation for all security-related occurrences.
  • Exemplify ethical and professional behavior at all times while engaging with staff, visitors, residents, or community members.
  • Promote cooperation, collaboration, and flexibility while working alongside others to enhance the community's overall safety.

Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience:

  • Exceptional verbal communication skills allow for quick and accurate reporting of any unusual activities or incidents during your shift.
  • Proven ability to connect and collaborate positively with diverse groups, creating a respectful and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques, using sound judgment to confidently navigate challenging situations.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities that empower you to address and resolve issues effectively as they come up.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • Duties for this position demand the ability to move swiftly between locations, including the capability to run distances equivalent to a typical city block or more.
  • Candidates must exhibit exceptional vision (20/20), either naturally or with corrective lenses, to effectively see up close, at a distance, and peripherally. Additionally, outstanding hearing ability, with or without hearing aids, is non-negotiable.
  • The role requires frequent standing, walking, and the ability to run when necessary. Candidates must be comfortable with kneeling, bending, stooping, and maintaining alertness while standing for extended periods. Occasional lifting or moving of items weighing up to 50 lbs. is also expected.
  • The work environment includes periods of sitting and observing security screens with unwavering vigilance and alertness.
  • Punctuality is crucial; reliable transportation is mandatory to ensure timely arrival for assigned shifts.

 

It is imperative to understand that the individual in this position will not be armed unless explicit approval is granted by the Senior Director of Security Services, confirming that all necessary training and qualifications have been successfully completed.
