Senior Accountant - Winery

Company Profile: 

Opolo Wines, LP is an established family winery in Paso Robles, CA that produces and sells wines and distilled spirits. 

Job Summary: 

Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant will perform and support key accounting functions, in connection with the company’s wine production business, while ensuring accuracy, transparency and financial/data integrity, in adherence to GAAP and industry-related regulatory compliance.   This person will provide managerial oversight for the accounting team and will bridge the gap between the team and upper management. 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

Manage full-cycle general ledger activities to include journal entries, account reconciliations and preparation of financial statements;

Perform monthly, quarterly and year-end closes;

Lead cost accounting for wine production, tracking and allocating costs for estate grapes, bulk wine, barrel aging, bottling and finished goods; calculate variances and overhead;

Oversee inventory accounting and reconciliations for vineyard fruit, cellar stock and case goods, ensuring proper valuation under GAAP and TTB compliance;

Analyze production costs, inventory reserves and variances; provide actionable reports to winemaking, vineyard, and leadership teams;

Support budgeting, forecasting, pricing decisions and excise tax filings (federal and state);

Collaborate with production, winemaking and vineyard teams, to refine costing processes and improve data accuracy in our sustainable, estate-driven operations;

Assist with audits, process improvements and special projects;

Mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative, dynamic, family-oriented work environment.  

Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field;

5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2–3 years in cost accounting, preferably within the wine/beverage, or manufacturing industries;

Proficiency in GL management, month-end close and financial reporting;

Hands-on experience with production/inventory costing within the wine, food or agricultural sector;

Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar) and advanced Excel;

Experience with Vintrace and Commerce 7, preferred;

Familiarity with TTB regulations, excise taxes and winery-specific practices, preferred;

Exceptional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;

Astute time management, attention to detail, accuracy, analytical, organizational, planning, multi-tasking, problem-solving and follow-through skills;

Ability to work effectively alone, within a collaborative team environment;

Passion for the wine industry and environmental sustainability. 

Compensation: 

$80k-100K DOE, for this full-time, exempt position
