About the Program: Hudson Highlands Nature Center’s Young Naturalist Preschool is a child-led, nature-immersive program grounded in developmentally appropriate practice and deep respect for children’s curiosity. Building on the success of our original Cornwall location, we’ve expanded to a second forest campus at Mountain Lake Park in Warwick, where children explore freely, engage in meaningful outdoor play, and build foundational social, emotional, and cognitive skills in community with nature.
Our emergent curriculum draws inspiration from Reggio Emilia, forest school practices, and play-based early childhood education. Children spend most of their day outside in all seasons and weather, following their interests while developing observation, stewardship, and a sense of wonder.
Position Overview: We are seeking 2 Part-Time Assistant Preschool Teachers to co-create a joyful, inquiry-rich experience for 3- and 4-year-olds. This is an ideal role for a creative and reflective educator who believes in the power of mud, movement, story, and self-directed discovery.
Position Description: Part Time Assistant Pre-K Teacher and After Class Teacher for Science & Nature Based Preschool Program for the Hudson Highland Nature Center's Warwick location at Mountain Lake Park.
Responsibilities to include:
- Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of the students at all times.
- Organize and clean classroom space to effectively meet the needs of the students.
- Collaborate with Lead Teacher to implement developmentally appropriate lessons and activities for preschool-aged children.
- Run and manage an after class extension program for the students
- Provide emotional support and care for children, creating a positive and supportive classroom environment.
- Participating in daily hikes in nature & facilitating nature play with students.
- Maintaining professional and positive dialogue with parents on a regular basis and with scheduled parent conferences.
- Recognizing and promoting the mission of the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum.
- Participating in & assisting with special Museum functions.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with children, preferably in a preschool or childcare setting.
- Good communication & writing skills.
- Ability to follow directions, manage time efficiently, and adapt to changing situations in a dynamic classroom environment.
- Must show an appreciation for the environment & an enthusiasm for sharing nature experiences with young children.
- Energetic & creative.
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday
- 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 per hour
