KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions

Program Leadership and Operations
  • Coordinate and oversee daily swim lesson operations, including group lessons, private lessons, adult swim lessons, YSPLASH, adaptive swim lessons (Swim Angel Fish), School Partnership Lessons and other specialty aquatic programs.
  • Maintain lesson curriculum and instructional standards to ensure program consistency and participant success. Stay up to date on any updates or changes to YSL swim curricul
  • Monitor student progress, maintain SwimGEN reports, and support instructors in delivering high-quality instruction. Ensure accurate recordkeeping, including attendance, participant progress, evaluations, and program documentation.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements to enhance participant experiences.
  • Support registration processes, program inquiries, and related administrative functions.
Staff Supervision and Development
  • In collaboration with the Aquatics Director, provides direct supervision of swim instructors and program staff, including scheduling, coaching, performance feedback, and corrective action.
  • Lead or assist with staff training, in-services, and professional development opportunities
  • Ensure staff compliance with facility policies, procedures, and safety standards.
Deck Management and Customer Service
  • Serve as Deck Manager and primary point of contact during swim lessons, ensuring efficient program operations, smooth class transitions, and positive customer experience.
  • Address questions, concerns, and complaints professionally and communicate significant issues to the Aquatics Director.
  • Ensure lesson areas remain organized, safe, and prepared for instruction.
Safety and Risk Management
  • Monitor pool deck activities to maintain a safe environment for participants, staff, and spectators.
  • Enforce facility rules, policies, and aquatic safety procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and provide leadership during emergency situations.
  • Assist with daily facility inspections and identify potential safety hazards
  • Maintain readiness to perform lifeguarding, rescue, and first aid responsibilities as needed, including providing direct lifeguard coverage as needed to support operations.

Other Position Functions:

  • Participates in required YMCA training, meetings and events
  • Maintains open communication with the Aquatic Team as well as other Y personnel and members.
  • Assists in maintaining first aid and emergency equipment within established standards.
  • Performs pool and locker-room checks, routinely picking up and cleaning as needed.
  • Documents of all accidents/ incidents per established YMCA policies and procedures and as required by law.
  • Assists the Aquatics Director in administrative duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience teaching swim lessons and working with aquatic programming required.
  • Experience with competitive swimming, swim team coaching, or advanced swim instruction preferred.
Required Certifications
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification.
  • Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor (YSLI) Certification or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of hire.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification, preferred. Or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Swim Angelfish Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Maintain all required certifications throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and staff supervision skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced aquatic environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with participants, families, staff, and community members.
  • Knowledge of aquatic risk management, water safety practices, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and decision-making.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Work is performed primarily in an indoor aquatic facility with elevated noise levels, warm temperatures, and high humidity. The position may involve exposure to pool chemicals, emergency situations, and challenging customer service interactions. Requires the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations and maintain professionalism in a fast-paced, high-activity environment.
This position requires regular evening and weekend availability, as well as flexibility to meet program and operational needs.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
  • Ability to work on wet and slippery surfaces safely.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance.
  • Ability to maintain the physical fitness required to perform water rescues and emergency response duties.
  • Ability to work in warm, humid pool environments and be exposed to pool chemicals and aquatic conditions.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Swim Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination, supervision, and quality assurance of swim lesson programming. This position provides leadership to swim instructors, ensures compliance with aquatic safety standards, maintains instructional excellence, and delivers exceptional customer service to participants and families. The Coordinator oversees daily lesson operations, supports staff development, and serves as the primary on-deck leader during assigned program hours.

This position requires regular evening and weekend availability and serves as the Deck Manager during evening swim lesson sessions.
