York High School is seeking a dynamic and student-centered Athletic/Activities Director to lead and oversee both our interscholastic athletic program and student activities. Serving approximately 482 students in grades 9–12, York High School offers 24 varsity sports, 35 athletic teams, and 27 clubs/activities.
Our school features outstanding facilities, including a new $6.1 million athletic complex with turf field and track, and is uniquely located just ½ mile from Long Sands Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The successful candidate will promote a culture of inclusion, engagement, sportsmanship, and academic excellence while supporting the growth and success of all students.
Job Goal
To provide each student with opportunities to participate in extracurricular athletics and activities that foster physical skills, a sense of belonging, personal growth, leadership, and an understanding of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play.
Responsibilities
Athletics:
-Supervise all coaches in interscholastic athletics in grades 9-12.
-Organize and administer the overall interscholastic athletic program for grades 9–12
-Provide leadership in the selection, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of coaches
-Coordinate and schedule all interscholastic contests, including transportation and facility use
-Hire and supervise officials, athletic trainers, and game personnel, and oversee home event operations
-Ensure compliance with Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) and Western Maine Conference (WMC) rules and eligibility requirements
-Develop and implement rules and procedures governing athletic participation
-Verify student-athlete eligibility (academic and physical requirements)
-Prepare and manage the athletic budget
-Oversee purchasing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of equipment and uniforms
-Supervise ticket sales, fundraising, and proper accounting of funds
-Maintain records of athletic participation, results, and awards
-Plan and supervise preseason, postseason, and recognition events
-Coordinate practice schedules and facility usage
-Arrange for the use of off-site facilities as needed
-Administer athletic insurance programs and related reporting
Student Activities:
-Oversee and support 27 clubs and student activities
-Supervise and support activity advisors
-Coordinate student events, programming, and facility usage
-Promote student leadership, engagement, and inclusive participation
-Support and manage activity budgets and resources
-Assist in planning school-wide events and traditions
Leadership & Community Relations:
-Foster strong school-community relationships, including collaboration with booster organizations
-Serve as liaison between school, families, and community
-Promote positive school culture, school spirit, and student involvement
-Support middle-level interscholastic programs and leadership development
-Attend league and state meetings as York High School’s representative
-Provide training and support for coaches and advisors
-Perform other duties as assigned by building administrators
Qualifications:
-State of Maine Certification (015 – Athletic Director, required; 045 – Assistant Principal, recommended)
-Successful experience in school administration, athletic administration, and/or coaching preferred
-Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
-Bachelor’s degree preferred
-Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience preferred
-Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
