Performs skilled, journey level mechanical and technical diagnostic work in the repair and maintenance of County vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses malfunctions in automotive equipment; removing and replacing worn or broken parts, and replacing fluids; enters maintenance data into computerized system.
Most of the work is performed in an indoors garage, but there is exposure to the heat and cold as is commonly experienced in this environment. Additionally, some of the work is performed outdoors in the field.
Incumbent must be available to respond to calls for service after normal working hours on a rotational basis. This position is considered an essential position, which requires the individual to report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions.
Performs preventative maintenance, diagnostics and repair to cars, light duty trucks, light duty fire apparatus, ambulances, and other emergency service vehicles ensuring dependability and safety of operation.
Services and repairs problems relating to fuel injection, gas and diesel engines, computerized engine controls, manual and automatic transmissions, clutches, HVAC systems, suspension, steering, and brakes.
Installs special equipment and modifications to vehicles such as prisoner partitions, camera systems, and defibrillator units to law enforcement vehicles lights, fast idle, toolboxes, and specialty public safety equipment.
Tests and diagnoses drivability problems and component failures to determine the cause.
Performs Virginia State Inspections.
Enters maintenance data information into computerized system.
Diagnoses problems with heavy equipment as needed in the shop as well as in the field.
Greets and assists customers in a timely, courteous manner.
Calls dealership to check to see if needed repairs are under warranty
Installs and removes vehicle graphics.
Responds to after-hour calls.
Practices continuous learning through individual study, classroom training, video or web-based training.
Perform monthly and semi-annual school bus inspections to Head Start buses.
Performs maintenance and repairs to shop equipment; performs general shop maintenance and cleans shop; assists in identification and ordering of needed repair parts to include but not limited to generators, fuel sites and other specialty equipment.
Picks up and delivers vehicles for outside repair.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, and 2 to 4 years of experience servicing passenger automobiles and light trucks.
Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or the ability to obtain within one year from date of hire, Virginia State Inspection license, forklift operator license, minimum of two (2) ASE certifications, and A/C Technician Certification (EPA-approved Section 609).
Safety shoes, and a full set of hand tools with locking toolbox required.
This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include background checks, DMV records checks and drug/alcohol screening.
This position is considered an essential position (County designation as ALPHA) which requires the individual report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions outside of normal working hours. Incumbent must be available to respond to calls for service after normal working hours on a rotational basis.
Supplemental Information
Additional compensation is available for ASE certifications above the minimum number required for the position.

Thorough knowledge and skill in the repair and maintenance of gasoline engines, diesel engines, electrical/electronic systems, air, hydraulic, vacuum and electric braking systems, steering/suspension systems, transmission/differential systems, and HVAC systems.
General knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Knowledge of alternative fuels and EV systems.
Ability to use and safely operate a wide variety of hand and power tools associated with the automobile/heavy equipment trade.
Ability to correctly diagnose and repair complex vehicle electronic systems with computerized automotive diagnostic equipment such as a scan tool and/or laptop.
Ability to read and understand complex technical manuals and PC-based diagnostic information.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Physical Demands
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including passenger vehicles, trucks, tractors, etc., and various mechanic's equipment and tools. Work involves frequent stooping, bending, climbing stairs or ladders to get onto equipment, some crawling underneath of vehicles, carrying, and gripping of tools, parts, and tires, and some pushing/pulling of tires and other parts and equipment weighing approximately 50 pounds.
