What are the responsibilities and job description for the Computer Support Technician I position at York County, VA?
Performs professional skilled work assisting in the operation and support of the County’s wide area network. Assembles, installs, and troubleshoots computers, peripherals, and connectivity; trains County employees in the effective use of equipment and software.
Incumbent must be available to respond to calls for service after normal working hours on a rotational basis.
Assembles, installs, and troubleshoots computers, printers, phones, and other equipment; replaces defective parts; repairs and cleans equipment and components; performs preventive maintenance when possible; troubleshoots basic software and printer issues.
Provides help desk support by troubleshooting and providing corrective action over the phone; assists users in effective use of applications.
Works with hardware and software vendors to solve technical problems.
Prepares new computers for deployment on the network; configures network cards and/or wireless; creates and deletes network user and mail profiles as required; deploys personal computer to user in the field, and updates user hardware asset tracking data base.
Provides network support by creating network cables that meet current standards, troubleshooting network cable problems, running CAT, phone lines, and fiber optic cable through offices; physically installs various network devices including switches, Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPSs) while maintaining physical and passive network security.
Able to participate in the on-call rotation on a regular basis. Must understand and follow detailed instructions and be able to coordinate work to be performed and communicate well with the end-users. Able to carry out assigned projects, maintain records and documentation, and balance them with daily work assignments. Able to deploy computers and peripheral devices.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a GED or high school diploma and one year of experience in computer networks, computer support, and software applications.
Requires an acceptable criminal background investigation, including an acceptable applicant fingerprint check required by the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Security Policy.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include criminal history, background and DMV record checks.
CompTIA A Certification preferred.
Supplemental Information
General knowledge of installation, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures for computers and related equipment. General knowledge of computer components such as memory, CPU, hard drive, video card, etc.
General knowledge of data processing principles in personal computer applications, programming, and systems development. General knowledge of Microsoft networking and local area networks.

Physical Demands
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, plotters, printers, copiers, facsimiles, etc. Must be able to lift and install computers, and the ability to move components weighing up to 55 pounds as needed. Physical demand requirements are for those of Moderately Active Work.
