What are the responsibilities and job description for the Swim Team Coach-Certified position at YMCA?
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Coach will assist in the supervision of all aspects of the competitive swimming program, including teaching, administration and deck coaching as a representative of the YMCA at all team events and functions. They will also monitor the participants for safety and serve all member and non-members of the YMCA in accordance with the purposes and policies of the association.
Essential Functions / Job Duties:
• This position will serve as the swim coach and will be responsible for the supervision of the practices for the swim team and other groups as may be deemed necessary
• The Swim Coach will assist in planning and supervising workouts, teach stroke analysis, drills & techniques, and familiarity with current coaching trends.
• The Swim Coach will help the Aquatics Director to implement new competitive aquatics programs and be responsible for all participant recruitment, retention, program carryout and administrative tasks associated with programs
• The Swim Coach will help the Aquatics Director provide member services and promote the swim team program; communicate as necessary with parents and other coaches regarding assignments, swimmer progress, and upcoming events
• The Swim Coach will help the Aquatics Director in the development of the feeder program and recruitment strategy to ensure continuous growth of team
• The Swim Coach attend swim meets as scheduled and assist with preparation of all special events relating to swim team
• All swim coaches must be able to teach Private Competitive Lessons through the YMCA. Any individual wishing to take private lessons with a YMCA swim coach must do so at the YMCA with all paperwork and finances running through the YMCA system. YMCA swim coaches may not teach free-lance swim lessons at our or any pool paid or volunteer.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities / Position Requirements:
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to effectively discipline, counsel, and evaluate job performance

• Computer literate; working knowledge of Microsoft Office, e-mail and Internet
• Ability to work independently and utilize initiative, ability to be organized and to meet deadlines
• Good judgment and solid decision making skills; strong oral and written communication skills; excellent customer service skills; and an attitude of professionalism and respect
• Ability to interact well with all levels of members, parents, staff, management, and YMCA Board of Directors
• Ability to handle occasional stressful conditions, react calmly in emergency situations, and work irregular hours
• Sensitivity to, understanding, and support of the YMCA mission and core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility
• Coaching skills should include stroke analysis, familiarity with current coaching trends, use of video, dry land training and swimmer motivation
Certifications:
• Current CPR certification (For the Professional Rescuer, or Healthcare Provider)
• Current First Aid and AED certification
• Safety Training for Swim Coaches In-Water Skills Checklist (within 30 days of employment)
• YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving certification (within 30 days of employment)
Other Duties as Assigned Hours:
Hours will be determined by Aquatics Director. Hours are not guaranteed as a set per week, but will fluctuate depending on pool schedule, practice schedule, swim meets, number of participants, and other staff. Swim Coach (as part-time staff) will not work more than 25 hours per any week without prior approval of the Director of Aquatics.
