Leads the lifeguard team in maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a positive atmosphere that promotes safety and engagement for staff, volunteers, and members.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF A HEAD LIFEGUARD:
- Leads the lifeguard team to meet operational needs of the pool and fulfill YMCA objectives.
- Assists aquatic supervisor in recruiting, hiring, and training of lifeguards and junior lifeguards.
- Works with aquatic supervisor to ensure lifeguard expenses fall within the department budget.
- With aquatic supervisor, create the lifeguard schedule, incorporating time for breaks and cleaning.
- Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or Health Department code.
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
- Create a mission-based environment which enables everyone to be engaged in the YMCA movement.
- Attends all staff meetings and in-service training; trains and supervises junior lifeguards as assigned.
- Completes essential functions of a lifeguard while serving in-ratio as needed for proper operation.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE A HEAD LIFEGUARD:
- Minimum age of 18.
- Minimum of one year working as a lifeguard; preferably with the YMCA.
- Current Lifeguard and Swim Instructor Certification.
- Ability to relate to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Ability to think in the abstract, solve problems, and make quick decisions under stress.
- Have adequate memory skills to be able to retain and apply lifeguard training knowledge.
- Ability to effectively communicate information with members, peers, and supervisors.
- Must be observant, safety conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency.
