What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Camp Director position at YMCA?
The Assistant Camp Director will assist in the day to day operations of our overnight summer camp program. Major responsibilities will include weekly and daily scheduling for staff and campers, supervising programming, and acting in the absence of the camp director. This position requires strong leadership, organizational, and creative qualities.
This is a seasonal position from April-August, 2026
General Functions:
To be responsible for a wide range of responsibilities in order to ensure summer camp is successful.
SALARY RANGE:
$900/week
Specific Responsibilities:
- Assist the camp director and leadership team in planning and carrying out pre-camp and in-service staff training
- Assist with supervision and appraisal of unit leaders and counselors
- Maintain proper records as required by camp director
- Coordinate matters of interest in areas of overlapping responsibility while always seeking the best solution for campers and the camp
- Responsible for overseeing staff and campers in assigned program areas
- Establish and maintain systems for check in, cabin lists, schedules, and check out
- Assist in overall program development of assigned camp areas, including meals
- Check in with staff daily; provide appropriate support and leadership for each counselor
- Act as an assistant to the Camp Director in all daily function
- Coordinate matters of interest in areas of overlapping responsibility while always seeking the best solution for campers and the camp
- Perform chosen "coordinator duties" each week
- Use established system for communication with other camp departments
- Be able to communicate and work well with other members of the leadership team
Essential Functions:
- Be able to assist with the training of all staff
- Be able to work and communicate well with a variety of age groups
- Have visual ability recognize hazards in the camp setting the auditory ability to respond appropriately to those hazards
- Be able to observe camper and staff behavior to respond to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with daily and weekly schedules and organizational duties
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least twenty-one years of age
- Experience as a leadership staff member in a camp setting preferred
- Experience planning and facilitating large group programming
- Ability to speak to large groups effectively
- At least two years of college with course work primarily in education, child development or similar
- Leadership and supervisory experience is preferred
- Strong organization with an ability to multitask and fill roles as needed
- Flexible, creative and mature, with ability to be self-motivated and work with minimum supervision
- Ability to relate to peers as well as youth effectively
- Believe in the values of the YMCA of Silicon Valley as well as the individual worth of the camper
- CPR and First Aid certified (can be obtained upon hire)
- YMCA approved driver preferred (can be obtained upon hire)
