POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides direct supervision of an assigned group of children and is responsible for providing a quality experience for children through planning and leading age appropriate activities consistent with the YMCA Afterschool Programming, incorporating The Y’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards for Early Childhood and Afterschool Programs. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Implements planned program curriculum within established guidelines that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, engaging and consistent with the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. 
  2. Incorporates fully the activity components of the YMCA Afterschool Program.
  3. Ensures that all children are provided a nutritious daily snack.
  4. Assists in all planned activities including special instruction, sports, or other special events.
  5. Makes on-going, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  6. Adheres to program standards including set-up, safety and cleanliness standards.
  7. Attends and participate in all required staff meetings and staff development opportunities at a minimum of 10 hours of in-service per year after the first year of service.
  8. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  9. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills including Listen First in all interactions.
  10. Supports The Y’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA), encouraging children, adults and families to adopt a healthy lifestyle and role-models the standards.
  11. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum age requirement – 16 years of age.
  2. High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  3. Previous experience working with children.
  4. Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: the arts including visual and performing, sports, aquatics, and recreational games.
  5. CPR, First Aid, & AED certifications required within 30 days of employment.
  6. Complete YMCA of the USA New Employee Orientation e-learning course.
  7. Complete YMCA Policy and Procedures for New Employees within 60 days of employment.
  8. Begin state-mandated child care classes within 90 days of employment and complete within one year.
  9. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred; the ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate and developmentally-appropriate program activities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position will require sudden movements, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, running and lifting.  Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
