Under the direction of the Director of Gymnastics, the Competitive Gymnastics Head Coach is responsible for the vision, development, supervision, and daily execution of the YMCA’s competitive gymnastics program. This role provides hands-on coaching, oversees training plans and meet preparation, develops and mentors coaching staff, ensures program safety and compliance, supports enrollment and retention, and fosters a positive, athlete-centered culture aligned with the YMCA’s mission and core values.

Under the direction of the Director of Gymnastics, the Competitive Gymnastics Head Coach is responsible for the vision, development, supervision, and daily execution of the YMCA’s competitive gymnastics program. This role provides hands-on coaching, oversees training plans and meet preparation, develops and mentors coaching staff, ensures program safety and compliance, supports enrollment and retention, and fosters a positive, athlete-centered culture aligned with the YMCA’s mission and core values.
Qualifications
- Minimum 21 years of age
- High School diploma or equivalent; college education preferred
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience coaching competitive gymnastics. Experience coaching optional level gymnastics (USAG Levels 6-10) is required
- Prior experience supervising assistant coaches is strongly preferred
- Background as a competitive gymnast is a plus
- Must pass a criminal background check
- Current CPR, First Aid, and Safe Sport Certifications required
- Strong technical knowledge of gymnastics skills, rules, and safety protocols
- Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire youth athletes while modeling YMCA core values
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Proven experience supervising assistant coaches and/or volunteers
- Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage schedules, meet logistics, and program goals
- Proficiency with common administrative tools (Google Workspace, TeamSnap, or similar systems) preferred
- Willingness and ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel for competitions as required
- Ability to demonstrate gymnastics skills and actively spot athletes
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs
- Ability to respond swiftly and appropriately in emergencies, following the YMCA’s emergency action plan
- Exposure to a loud, fast-paced gym environment is expected
- Assist the Gymnastics Director in the planning and development of the competitive gymnastics program
- Schedule recreational and competitive meets
- Manage the budget for the gymnastics program
- Hire and train new staff
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all youth participants
