The Gymnastics Team Coach supports the mission of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This role is responsible for creating a safe, structured, and engaging environment for competitive gymnasts, while fostering confidence, skill development, and a positive team culture.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Teach USA Gymnastics (USAG) routines using appropriate progressions and lesson planning techniques
- Coach a group of approximately 6–10 gymnasts during scheduled practices
- Provide active supervision, ensuring safety and proper technique at all times
- Spot athletes and assist with skill development across apparatus
- Develop and implement structured lesson plans for rotations
- Attend all scheduled practices, meets, and required trainings
- Participate in coaches meetings (approximately 3–4 annually)
- Represent the YMCA professionally at meets, following team and code of conduct standards
- Maintain accurate attendance, athlete assessments, and timesheets
- Apply discipline consistently in alignment with YMCA policies
- Communicate effectively with parents, athletes, and staff
- Support scholarship fundraising initiatives as needed
- Follow all safety protocols; report concerns to the Gymnastics Director and/or Risk Management
- Perform other duties as assigned based on program needs
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (or currently enrolled)
- Previous experience as a competitive gymnast and/or 3–4 years of gymnastics instruction experience
- Experience with USAG Levels 1–5 and/or Xcel (Silver/Gold/Platinum) preferred
- Current CPR, First Aid, and SafeSport certifications (or ability to obtain)
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Strong knowledge of gymnastics techniques and coaching practices
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Availability for evening, weekend, and occasional extended hours
- Willingness to travel to offsite meets and events
- Employees age 18 must successfully complete a criminal background check
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to demonstrate and support gymnastics skills and activities
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, reach, and move for extended periods
- Ability to safely spot athletes and respond quickly in emergency situations
- Work environment includes varying noise levels based on activity
