Do you love basketball and enjoy helping kids learn new skills? The Cape Ann YMCA is looking for an enthusiastic Sports Group Instructor with a strong interest in basketball and a passion for working with children. This role includes leading our Rookie Hoops program for children ages 3–5, introducing young athletes to the basics of basketball, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a fun and supportive environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Instruction and Engagement

• Provide high-quality instruction in basketball and other recreational sports, with a primary focus on basketball and the Rookie Hoops program for children ages 3–5.

• Teach basic basketball skills, coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship in an engaging, age-appropriate way.

• Follow established curriculum and lesson plans to support consistent instruction and participant development.

Customer Service and Relationship Building

• Build positive relationships with children, families, and members while providing friendly and exceptional customer service.

• Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating the YMCA’s core values in all interactions.

Safety and Environment

• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized program area.

• Ensure equipment is used appropriately and stored securely, and follow safety procedures when responding to injuries or other concerns.

Program Support and Teamwork

• Collaborate with team members to support the successful operation of sports programs and activities.

• Assist with setting up and breaking down equipment for classes, practices, and events.

• High school diploma, GED/HiSET, or equivalent experience required. Relevant certifications may be required for the program area.

• Two years of experience working with children or youth in a structured setting preferred.

• Current CPR and First Aid certifications required or willingness to obtain.

• Relevant training or certification in the sports or recreational program area required.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds.

• Knowledge of basketball, sports fundamentals, and recreational activities.

• Flexible schedule with availability to meet program needs, including nights and weekends.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to demonstrate and verbally explain sports skills and activities.

• Ability to walk, stand, and sit, including on the floor, for extended periods.

• Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.

• Ability to bend, lean, kneel, and navigate uneven surfaces.

• Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods.

• Strong verbal communication skills.

• Visual and auditory ability to recognize and respond to emergencies, with the ability to act quickly when needed.
