Position Summary 

Under the supervision of the Director, the Program Specialist – Naturalist is responsible for creating and delivering inclusive, nature-based educational programs for K–12 students across diverse backgrounds. This role involves developing curriculum focused on environmental education, climate justice, wellness, and community engagement, while ensuring participant safety and fostering a positive learning environment. The Program Specialist leads programming across various YMCA nature initiatives, supports outreach to schools and families, prepares materials, maintains program records, and mentors youth development staff, all while promoting equity, sustainability, and meaningful outdoor experiences. 

 

Job Responsibilities 

Program Development & Delivery 

  • Design and lead inclusive, nature-based programs for K–12 youth, including environmental education, outdoor activities, wellness, and team-building. 
  • Develop and implement curriculum aligned with YMCA goals, educational standards, and participant needs. 
  • Facilitate programs for youth and families, ensuring a safe, engaging, and educational experience. 
  • Conduct program evaluations and recommend improvements based on community needs and participant feedback. 

Staff Mentorship & Collaboration 

  • Mentor and support youth development staff through collaboration, coaching, and modeling nature engagement strategies. 
  • Work collaboratively with internal departments and partners to ensure high-quality programming. 

Administrative & Operational Support 

  • Perform administrative duties related to program planning and reporting. 
  • Maintain program supplies and assist with housekeeping and logistical responsibilities. 
  • Ensure accurate documentation for compliance, grant reporting, and program tracking. 

Compliance, Safety & Risk Management 

  • Uphold YMCA and National Park Service policies, including those related to safety, risk management, and mandated reporting. 
  • Provide basic first aid and emergency response within the scope of your training. 
  • Maintain all required certifications and complete mandatory trainings (e.g., LMS, Child Abuse Prevention). 

 

Qualifications 

  • At least 21 years of age. 
  • Coursework in natural sciences, recreation, education, or a related field (minimum of 16 units). 
  • Experience working with youth and applying effective teaching strategies for K–12 students. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and communities. 
  • Able to remain calm and professional in challenging situations. 
  • Available to work weekday shifts (Monday–Friday) and occasional weekends as scheduled. 
  • YMCA-approved First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire). 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. 
  • Experience in designing or contributing to curriculum development. 
  • Proficiency in additional languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese is valued. 
  • Wilderness First Aid and/or Wilderness First Responder certification is preferred. 

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands 

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the role, with or without reasonable accommodations. 
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry items up to 50 pounds. 
  • All employees working with youth are considered to hold a position of trust and are required to complete fingerprinting for background clearance prior to their first day of work. 
  • Staff assigned to SFUSD campuses may be required to complete additional health and safety training, including COVID-related protocols. 
  • Proof of a negative TB test is required

Salary Description 

The Program Specialist – Naturalist II position offers a compensation range of $22.10-$26.00 per hour. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with grant fund approvals and requirements for the position.
