Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Sr. Director of Healthy Living, the Group Exercise Coordinator oversees the implementation and management of group exercise programs at the Richmond District YMCA. In alignment with YMCA of San Francisco member engagement strategies, this role collaborates with branch leadership and healthy living staff to support an engaging and welcoming wellness environment.
The position includes approximately 35 hours per week of administrative and member engagement responsibilities and 5 hours per week leading group exercise classes.
Group Fitness Coordinator Rate: $25.00-$30.00
Group Ex Instructor Rate: $31.60-$50.00
Job Responsibilities
Program & Staff Leadership
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate Group Exercise instructors in alignment with YMCA policies and safety standards.
- Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and performance evaluations for staff.
- Support staff scheduling, coverage, and payroll approval using ADP and Upace.
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for staff, members, and volunteers.
Operations & Administration
- Support the Senior Director of Healthy Living in the development and management of departmental budgets.
- Maintain and update group exercise schedules based on member needs and program demand.
- Create facility schedules and member engagement materials for wellness programming.
- Communicate equipment needs and coordinate preventative maintenance with the Facilities team.
- Complete required trainings, attend staff meetings, and support quarterly fidelity reviews.
- Follow YMCA policies related to safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management.
Member Engagement & Community Impact
- Provide youth and adult equipment orientations and connect members to wellness programs.
- Respond to member feedback and support continuous improvement efforts.
- Participate in community events and support the Annual Giving Campaign.
- Assist with evaluating and improving member engagement tools and strategies.
Group Exercise Instruction
- Plan and lead safe, inclusive group exercise classes for participants of varying experience levels.
- Use participant-centered instruction, appropriate pacing, and class modifications.
- Build positive relationships and support community-building within classes.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized exercise environment, including equipment care.
- Connect members to additional wellness offerings and resources.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule that may include mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- At least one year of experience in an administrative or coordination role within a health, wellness, or related setting.
- At least one year of experience leading group exercise or wellness classes.
- Ability to instruct and support participants across a range of age groups.
- Current YMCA-approved CPR/First Aid certification.
- Nationally recognized Group Exercise Instructor certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
- Experience recruiting, training, or supervising staff.
- One year of experience overseeing group exercise or wellness programs.
- Proficiency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in the community served.

- This role involves responsibility for the supervision and safety of minors. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required fingerprinting and background screening, which must be completed prior to the first day of work in accordance with YMCA policies.
Salary : $25 - $30
