The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking an Assistant Day Camp Director to join our team.

 

The YMCA focuses on empowering people in all forms, by improving health and well-being and inspiring action in and across our neighborhoods. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. 

 

As a Assistant Day Camp Director, you will be responsible for leading, supporting, and mentoring Day Camp Unit Leaders, camp staff, and campers to ensure exceptional camp experience.

 

In this role, you will help plan and coordinate daily activities, guide staff in delivering high-quality programs, and maintain a fun, safe, and positive environment. Working closely with the Senior Program Director and Leadership Team, you’ll assist in organizing and carrying out the overall camp program. During the preseason, you’ll play a key role in recruiting staff, welcoming new campers, and building strong, professional relationships with campers and their families. Everything you do reflects the YMCA’s core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring all while representing both yourself and the Y with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a commitment to safety and fun.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety, and YMCA values while modeling and upholding camp policies and the code of conduct.
  • Plan, design, and lead age-appropriate activities and schedules for campers.
  • Enforce safety protocols, emergency procedures, and risk-management practices to ensure the well-being of campers and staff.
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with parents regarding daily updates, camper health, and behavioral concerns in collaboration with the Camp Director and Unit Leaders.
  • Assist with camper check-in and check-out at Camp Lake Helena and bus stops as needed, serving as an essential part of the parent communication team.
  • Help plan and facilitate theme days, special events, opening rallies, and closing campfires.
  • Remain flexible and support group coverage or programming needs as they arise.
  • Enforce rules and expectations to ensure safe and responsible use of program areas.
  • Assist with the supervision of youth and staff as directed.
  • Directly supervise Day Camp Unit Leaders through coaching, modeling, reinforcing expectations, addressing challenges, and conducting mid-summer and end-of-summer evaluations.
  • Build meaningful connections with staff by learning their strengths, interests, and growth areas, ensuring a positive and supportive summer experience.
  • Provide ongoing supervision, guidance, and feedback to ensure high-quality programming and a safe, supportive work environment.
  • Embrace and actively promote an inclusive and equitable workplace.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • A minimum age of 21 years of age.
  • Two years of experience working with kids (preferred).
  • Knowledge of YMCA Camp Lake Helena’s operation procedures, especially the supervision and operation of program areas or the ability to acquire that knowledge (preferred).
  • The ability to effectively communicate with staff and participants of all ages.
  • The ability to demonstrate a friendly, courteous, and professional manner while working with members, parents, guests, and staff and understand, articulate, and positively enforce YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Positive attitude and previous experience with diverse populations.
  • Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).
  • You are committed to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day, and other online and in-person training as required.

 

Preferred Certifications:

  • Wilderness First Aid or higher medical
  • Lifeguard Certification
  • Challenge Course Facilitator Certification

 

Wage: $19.66 to $21.66 per hour, depending on qualifications

 

Dates of Employment: June 9th - August 28th, 2026

 

Location: Camp Lake Helena, Port Orchard, WA 

 

Benefits: Seasonal, Full-time

  • 40 hours/week with Saturday and Sunday’s off
