What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Counselor position at YMCA of Middletown?
Seeking Summer Camp Counselors for the following camp locations under the Middletown YMCA;
Camp Funshine( Ages 3-8)-Liberty street, Middletown NY
Camp Summer Squad( Ages 9-15)- 81 Highland Ave, Middletown NY
We are also looking for Pre and/or Post Camp Counselors- Pre Camp is 7:00am- 9:00am and Post Camp is 4:00pm- 6:00pm. Camp Season starts: June 29th- August 21st with the option to work an additional Bonus Week from August 24th- 28th. All counselors must complete approximately 30 hours of paid training beginning in June.
SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Summer Camp Counselor
Reports to: Camp Director
General Function
Under the direct supervision of the Camp Director, counselors will carry out duties necessary to the daily function of the program.
Qualifications
1. Must be at least 17 years of age
2. Prior experience in camping, recreation, physical education, teaching or child care.
3. Skill is teaching crafts, songs, stories, games, sports, and related camp skills.
4. Strong Leadership Skills
Specific Duties
1. Ensure the guidance and safety of all campers.
2. Must help with the opening of the Camp, working at least 4 hours.
3. Plans and leads activities with the group as indicated on the camp schedule.
4. Assist the Camp Director in conducting the daily program schedule of camp.
5. Cares for and maintains camp equipment and property
6. Maintain a positive relationship with campers, parents, and other staff members.
7. Participates in and assist with all programing efforts. (Fun Fridays and All Camp Hikes)
8. Attempts to answer parents’ concerns or make appropriate referrals to the Camp Director.
9. Swim with campers when necessary (if 8 or more of your campers are swimming)
10. Assist Camp Director and take leadership role if needed.
11. Be a strong role model for the campers.
12. Participate in ALL trainings.
13. Participate in any special camp events. (Family Night BBQ, Overnight, etc.)
14. Must work the entire camp season.
15. Wear camp T-shirt daily and dress appropriately.
16. Understand all YMCA policies and procedures.
17. All other duties as assigned

1. A warm, progressive, educational, fun and safe environment for the children.
2. A program that parents/guardians can rely on, with their children being provided consistent care.
3. A coordinated, balanced program between the YMCA, school district and community.
4. A program that reflects the YMCA mission and values.
